Shes Nile - a brand new artist and
a brand new style......
Singer/songwriter Jenée Grevious
is a rare and undeniable talent. Her debut album was 5 years.
It has taken her time to get to where shes at. The results
are stunning. The genre? Well, we like to call it Hip-Hop
Blues. Think Billie Holliday with a Lauryn Hill attitude
and just a hint of Bristol; via Miami, Atlanta, LA and Ohio,
and you're getting close to Nile's sound.
Born to a Blackfoot Indian mother and a
French father in Ohio, Nile grew up on a staple diet of music
from a very early age. Not allowed to listen to the radio
as a child, Nile's talents bloomed to sing-a-longs in the
living room, garden, and bedrooms of the family home. A truly
out-there character, Nile has a very unique take on life.
Being an Aquarian and very much a meandering free spirit,
Nile was the obvious name choice.
Hooking up with a studio and producer in
Miami, there were many long hot nights ahead to complete the
recording process - but the fruits of Nile's labour are rich.
With a sound that is arguably more European than East coast,
you cant help thinking that this might just be a big
crossover act for late summer.
The album oozes dark, and dubby sensuality
from every pore. Featuring tracks like the recently mailed
(and loved) 3 In Tha Morning, and Kiss Me
which are quite simply sex. Amazing production is the key
- alongside the alluring vocals and lyrics from Nile.
Tracks like Koko Pelli and Iksume
(Other Side) explore the darker side of beats, while
Bobbie is the closest Nile gets to the poetry
of Jill Scott. Soul was never meant to move move this much.
Deep, exploratory, and melodic, this record is an ever rewarding
challenge. Theres just the one cover on the album (there
were 49 tracks written in the original sessions) which is
a dramatic reworking of To Sir With Love written
for Lulu, and also performed by legend Al Green.
