Album Review

What a shame. Canada's indie darling 'supergroup' has gone and sucked all the life out of itself by making a record that really wasn't asking to be made. Sapping the energy from Neko Case must take some doing, but Challengers manages that feat, rendering AC Newman's songs only OK, Dan Bejar (of Destroyer 'fame') Michael Crawford-melodramatic and her own music curiously anodyne. Perhaps we have just had the best of this band, with the shockingly high energy pop that they were so happy to lay into, all hooks and electricity on Mass Romantic and Electric Version.

Twin Cinemas started the slide, and was a lot more 'grown up'. But, at the same time, a whole lot less interesting - the mood had gone, and with it any interest in AC Newman's songwriting. Which really isn't that great, unless it is engaging Neko Case's Peggy Lee vocal talents and kicking the bounce to 10. Challengers marks the timepoint at which you have to try to like the band - that shouldn't stop you seeking out their essential earlier albums.

Rating 5/10

Wow. You own a whole 400 albums? Well, you're well placed to judge the band in context with such a massive collection. Use you own words, fanboy. "It's probably the worst NP album" Do your own rating then. If Mass Romantic's a 9, and Twin Cinema's an 8, where exactly would you put this? Or are all their albums a 10, just because, like, they're the New Pornographers..? Challengers is a boring, recipe-following copy of a NP album. Don't blame me - I didn't make it.

I have to second that this is a terrible review and I also second that this is probably the NP worst album but it's still at least an 8, you have to remember the standard you are judging it by. Most of the songs are different from previous albums but just because they aren't as energetic as they once were doesn't mean they aren't as good. The reviewer lost all credibility when he claimed that Twin Cinema was the beginning of their slide, what absolute rubbish, I wish every band would begin a downward spiral if they could produce songs like Use It or These are the Fables! I'd like Mike Rea (who claims to be an NP fan) to tell us which albums he judges to be an 8 or 9 because I'd really like to hear this 'amazing' music. I own well over 400 albums there is not one other band who consistently delivers like the NP and if anyone thinks there is, I challenge them to name them!!
