Nelly is a well-known artist with successful singles such as ‘Hot in Here’ that is featured as a remix on this single. Nelly has been slammed by some hip hop artists as selling out due to style not
necessarily being true to underground hip hop standards. His style is more commercial, good or bad, but certainly does appeal to his fans. ‘My Place’ as a single on its own is pretty good. It has a real smooth r’n’b sound to
it with great backing singing both female and male to
give it a real progressive Motown sound. It’s a sensitive single with commercial appeal that is well produced. It’s hard to categorise this single as hip hop even though Nelly does rap
on it. It seems a million miles away from Public Enemy but I guess that goes to show how slick hip hop has become.
