An epic myth serves to tell a fantastic story, while paralleling fundamental aspects of the natural world, and everything that dwells upon it. Likewise, a record rich in storytelling can furnish the listener with a unique worldview. Somewhere, deep within the orphic washes of melody and voice, the mythic beast that is Z was born. It's a record that is ripe with mystery and ample discovery.

Returning with their fourth full-length, My Morning Jacket has created a dazzling centerpiece with Z. Those enamored by the band's previous efforts will find all of the signature My Morning Jacket elements, though Z finds the band reaching across new territories. Jim James takes greater dares with his voice, and comes away sounding even more immaculate. Z's evolved sound also has roots in recording with the two newest additions to the band, Carl Broemel (guitar) and Bo Koster (keys), who provided a fresh compliment to founding members Jim James, Two Tone Tommy and Patrick Hallahan.

My Morning Jacket have been steadily building their catalogue, beginning with 1999's "The Tennessee Fire," followed by "At Dawn" and 2003's "It Still Moves." Each record a sonic step forward. Add that to their breathtaking live performances, and the songwriting talents of Jim James, and you begin to feel the story take on its own life, which is the heartbeat of Z.

Z breathes with a requisite sense of the unknown, heightened by the band's unique arrangements and employment of exotic soundscapes. Listen to the driving force of "Off the Record" or the haunting confessions of "It Beats For You," and an uncanny vision of Z comes to shape, almost familiar yet adventurously reaching into new territory. Songs such as "Knot Comes Loose" reacquaint us with the pure song writing and the spiritual singing of Jim James, while "Lay Low" becomes an extension of those qualities coupled with absolutely un-ironic My Morning Jacket guitar rock assault courtesy of Mr. James and Carl Broemel. Patrick Hallahan, Two-Tone Tommy and Bo Koster lay down a soulful rhythm and groove in "Wordless Chorus" that gives Jim James the perfect launching pad for his celestial voice to reach un-chartered heights. Truly, My Morning Jacket has perfected the myth, and this record is a testament to their collective passions and talents.
