The first time that I encountered Mum, they were a gentle, ambient, almost classical affair, shuffling about a Sheffield stage. or at least that's the image I took away with me and harboured all these years; impressed enough to raise an eyebrow when they infrequently appeared in conversation, but not enough to follow them with any devotion.

But now!?! Well, now, 'They Made Frogs Smoke.' finds them lively and playful, all broken beats, a collage of childlike sing-songs with a lilting melody. It's inventive and quirky, off kilter and idiosyncratic. Mum, however, are a band that don't let their experimental ambitions get in the way of creating a music that is entirely loveable, danceable and heartwarming.
