NEW BANDS YOU MUST HEAR IN 2002. Unplugged lullabies of shimmering, delicate delight a great band album of the month intelligent, angular, alt-rock that will be compared to
the
more interesting parts of Radioheads back catalogue
With a gene pool that ripples from Italy to Iceland via Weston Super-Mare its hardly surprising that Lorien find it hard to pin down their collective influences. The three piece channel a wealth of different experiences to forge some of the most inventive, elegant and fragile music you will hear this year. Comprising Italian born vocalist/guitarist Fabio, a tall good looking fella from Iceland called Einar on guitars and former Golden Sunbed delivery boy Carlo on drums, Lorien formed in February 98. Following a series of low key gigs the band were approached for management by Stevo head honcho of leftfield label Some Bizarre. Lorien subsequently signed to Instant Karma early in 2000. Lorien entered the studio with the producer Mike Hedges (Manics/u2 etc) at the helm in February 2001. Their debut single Shivering Sun was released in October of the same year. Lorien accrued further acclaim in January with their second release the haunting Ghostlost. NME went on to cite Lorien as one of 34 bands you must hear in 2002. Lyrically, loose themes of optimism and bittersweet melancholia come to the fore yet Fabio is reluctant to be drawn on specifics, You can read Alice In Wonderland at five years old but 20 years later, its a completely different book he says, people should draw their own interpretations. As for the name, it was culled from Tolkiens Lothlorien where Lorien stands as a mythical forest. Fabio liked the sound of it and somehow, it seemed kind of apt. Lorien release their debut album Under The Waves on Instant Karma on April 15th. They have just been added to the Q tour and go round the country from April 19th. See below for full tour dates.
