SYNOPSIS

"There are good kidnappings and there are bad kidnappings. A good kidnapping is when you take a kid, but return him safely to his parents when everything is over."

That famous line appeared in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, the first film in Park Chan-wook's acclaimed Vengeance Trilogy, as part of a plan that went horribly wrong.

Those same words return in Lady Vengeance, the last film in the series. And as badly as those words went wrong the first time, this time they only lead to more tragedy, death and righteous anger.

This is the story of Lee Geum-ja, a beautiful and deadly young woman, half angel and half devil, as serene as she is furious.

While still in high school and faced with an unplanned pregnancy, Geum-ja found herself seeking refuge with the worst possible kind of man. He gave her a place to stay and plenty to eat, but what he asked of her was more than she could have guessed. When it was all over, Geum-ja found herself sentenced to 13 years in prison for the murder of a little boy, her daughter taken far away from her to be adopted by strangers.

Her decade in jail was not served idly, however. There was far more to the murder of that boy than Geum-ja let on, far more than the police knew. She spent her 13 years inside planning how to take revenge for all that she went through, forming alliances with her follow inmates and carefully plotting.

Fresh out of prison and on a mission of vengeance, Geum-ja gets a job at a bakery, and sets about putting her precise plan in motion. All the women she served with are out of jail, too, and each of them has an important role to play. Everything is going perfectly, and Geum-ja's plan is ready to be sprung, when she finds her long-lost daughter.

"Everyone makes mistakes. But if you sin, you have to make atonement for it. Big atonement for big sins… Small atonement for small sins."

But does Geum-ja's quest lead toward salvation or damnation? Is she an angel of mercy or a vengeful predator? Will she save those around her, or drag everyone down with her? And will Geum-ja's daughter help her find peace, or tear her apart?

If the first two films focused on the aggressive and exploding vengeance of male characters, Lady Vengeance looks at ways of the lone female finding her own solution for her anger. Also, while Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance centered on 'Abduction' and Oldboy 'Confinement', Lady Vengeance focuses on 'Atonement'.
