Okay, most adverts are a bit of nonsense. Every once in a while though, something flashes past and leaves an indelible image in one's brain. The Sony Bravia ad is one such example. To simplify the matter, we'll call it the 'bouncing ball' ad (filmed in San Francisco, with actual bouncing balls in real time we'll have you know). The accompanying soundtrack has the yearning vocal of one José González. 'Heartbeats' (originally recorded by The Knife) opens with THAT mellifluously hypnotic guitar line, which then transforms into a transcendental track that reaffirms José as one of 2005's breakthrough artists.
Currently Single of The Week at Zane Lowe on Radio One, with Jo Whiley spinning the tune regularly, the 'Heartbeats' single comes hot on the heels of José's exemplary appearance on the Twisted Folk tour with King Creosote. This is the time for this most distinctive of vocalists to be propelled into the mainstream.
For the majority of this year José has been causing an acoustic rumpus across Europe (plus playing in the US and Australia for the first time) and tearing at people's heartstrings as he wended his way. It all started back in February when the 'Crosses' EP signalled the arrival of a divergent talent. By the time the album Veneer was released in April, word had spread like wildfire. Then came his cover version of Kylie's 'Hand on your Heart', (on the 'Stay in the Shade' EP) which made radio continue to have palpitations and marches ever forward with 'Heartbeats'.
José is keeping incredibly busy with his new band Junip, working with a premier league UK production duo (more news soon) and will headline a one-off London date in January.
