Synopsis

Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman), head of the Open Spaces Coalition, has been experiencing an alarming series of coincidences the meaning of which escapes him. With the help of two Existential Detectives, Bernard and Vivian Jaffe (Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin), Albert examines his life, his relationships, and his conflict with Brad Stand (Jude Law), an executive climbing the corporate ladder at Huckabees, a popular chain of retail superstores. When Brad also hires the detectives, they dig deep into his seemingly perfect life and his relationship with his spokesmodel girlfriend, the voice of Huckabees, Dawn Campbell (Naomi Watts). Under the guidance of the Jaffes’ nemesis, the French radical Caterine Vauban (Isabelle Huppert), Albert pairs up with rebel firefighter Tommy Corn (Mark Wahlberg) to take matters into their own hands.

I Heart huckabees - Film Review

Ever not quite felt yourself? Ever not quite understood yourself, life and just about everything? Well, you’re not alone and there are people out there to help - the Existential Detectives.

Jason Schwartzman plays Albert Markovski, a tree-hugging poet seeking answers to life’s biggest questions and the latest client of said P.I.s (Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin). A series of coincidences brings him to their door and we enter a world where nothing is quite as

it seems, or seems quite as it is. Bernard Jaffe (Hoffman) and wife Vivian (Tomlin) begin to intensely search Albert’s spiritual garbage in search of the answers to his very self, while Albert battles bête-noire Brad Stand (Jude Law), finds his ‘other’ in eco-friendly fireman Tommy (Mark Wahlberg) and plays philosophical tug-o-war between the Jaffes and their arch nemesis Caterine Vauban (Isabelle Huppert). Confused? You might well be.

Undoubtedly a brave concept for a debut script (from Jeff Baena, who shares writing credits with director David ‘Smart Indie’ Russell) the hefty subject matter often leaves a few cranial scratch marks, but for every pondered paradigm ‘…Huckabees’ delivers more than just a few laughs. Complex it maybe, but the comedy comes first, right from the unexpectedly coarse opening through a further 100 minutes of mild slapstick and off-beat humour. But it’s the acting that wins you over most. The characters are mostly lovable, but all lovingly acted. Hoffman and Tomlin probably chewed off Russell's arms to get their parts, Wahlberg’s brilliant Tommy shines with an actor’s affection, while Schwartzman and Law deliver two tough roles with the joy of birthday boys given the PS2 and the Fender Strat.

It’s a multi-layered, high-tempo joyride and the closest thing we’ve had to the perfect thinking-person’s-comedy since Being John Malkovich. Go see.
