Hot Rod Circuit is no overnight success story. As far back as 1997, when most of today's bands were still in grade school, Hot Rod Circuit were busy honing their unique sound in the relative obscurity of their home state, Alabama. But, as frontman Andy Jackson explains, the band would soon look to take their music to a broader audience. "My wife and kids had gone to visit her mom in Connecticut and got up there and opened up a paper and saw that the shows in New York and Boston were in the paper," says Jackson. It was just a bigger scheme of things there, so she pretty much talked me into moving. I literally went into practice and told everybody 'Hey I'm gonna move; I'm ready to do this,' and everybody said they wanted to do it too."
The band set to working in the Northeast scene, eventually signing with up-and-coming indie label Triple Crown Records, making two records and touring ceaselessly across the country building relationships along the way. Hot Rod Circuit would eventually signs on as part of the growing Vagrant Records roster and release Sorry About Tomorrow, in 2002. The album marked the band's into an entirely different world than what they were used to. "It was definitely a learning experience. There was more press involved a lot more of the label being involved," says Jackson of the increased attention his band was beginning to get. And touring across the country with bands like Dashboard Confessional, Saves The Day, The Get Up Kids, New Found Glory, and a slew of others, Hot Rod Circuit perfected their sound and began writing the songs that would, two years later, become Reality's Coming Through.
Produce by Tim O'Heir (Superdrag, All-American Rejects) Reality's Coming Through is the next step in Hot Rod Circuit's career. After years of paying their dues on the road, the songwriting and sound of Reality's Coming Through is both innovative and introspective, but also accessible. "Musically we've all grown, which makes a major difference," says Jackson of the songs on Reality's Coming Through. "We just tried to capture as much flavor as we could, of the band and of our personalities." From the uptempo melodicism of "Inhabit It," and "Tell The Truth," to the harder-edged grind of "Fear The Sound" to the anthemic "Save You," Hot Rod Circuit aren't afraid to push the boundaries of rock and roll structure.
Hot Rod Circuit's guitar-laden rock sound recalls the glory days of '90s college rock, a fact that Jackson happily attests to. "That's what we came from. All the bands we listened to-The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr. Archers of Loaf, The Lemonheads, Sonic Youth-that's what we grew up on," says Jackson.
With the release of Reality's Coming Through, Hot Rod Circuit will receive the acclaim they've long deserved. Regardless of commercial success, Jackson and his bandmates stand behind Reality's Coming Through as their best record yet, a sentiment that is becoming increasingly shared. "Everybody who's heard it, everybody we've played it for, even playing the songs live, the response we're getting is so much stronger.
There's no way they've heard these songs when we play them. And by the time we're in the last two or three minutes of the song, people are singing the chorus. It's a totally different feeling that we've never had before." As far as Hot Rod Circuit is concerned, true success has already been attained. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
