“The song came about after somebody once called me a cheerleader in a negative light, “ says Gwen. “So I said ‘well f*** you, I am a cheerleader, watch me on stage. I’m gonna make a big
cheerleader song and you can f*** off.”
That cheerleader song is ‘Hollaback Girl’ which Gwen recorded with The Neptunes. Drawing from the 80s hip hop and dance scenes, Gwen once again fuses styles and influences to create a sound that
is uniquely Gwen.
Look out for the super-cool video directed by Paul Hunter which takes Gwen world into an American high school.
The single is taken from Gwen’s debut solo album ‘Love Angel Music Baby’ which has sold 600,000 copies to date in the UK. The album - which also includes the hit singles ‘What You
Waiting For’ and ‘Rich Girl’ – has been called the pop album of the year.
