Phats & Small star announces new dancefloor project Tong & Jules play it 5 weeks in a row on Radio 1 Remixes by Sharp Boys (George Michael, Rachel Stevens) “A huge pop-hit,” Billboard. On 22 nd August, Freemasons drop the dancefloor-smash, ‘Love On My Mind’ through Loaded records - and strut right in to Studio 54.document.write(''); ‘Love On My Mind’ is an infectious slab of disco-pop that slips on its sling-backs and heads straight to the floor. It shimmers with grandiose strings and a soaring vocal that’s already had everyone tipping this to be as big as last years’ ‘Lola’s Theme’. Pete Tong and Judge Jules have both played it five weeks in a row and the whole world is going crazy for this tune.
Freemasons are Russell Small and James Wiltshire. As one half of chart-topping duo Phats & Small, Russell’s first hit came in 1999 with ‘Turn Around.’ Reaching #2 in the Top 40, it stayed in the charts for 16 weeks and became a worldwide hit, selling 2 million copies internationally. Three more Top 20 hits followed with ‘Feel Good,’ ‘Tonite’ and ‘This Time Around.’ In addition to co-producing with Phats & Small, James has worked with the likes of Donna Summer, Texas and Kylie remix-masters Brothers In Rhythm.
Vocalist Amanda Wilson was discovered down the local karaoke bar. “We found Amanda singing karaoke,” says Russell. “We were just blown away by her voice, she’s got that soulful thing going on so we approached her and she was really up for it. It took two hours from start to finish once Amanda was on board.”
Next stop was the pub, Russell and James were sat in their local, The Freemasons toying around with a name for their duo. “We were having a drink and we were really stuck as to what to call ourselves,” says Russell. The landlord had said if the track got to # 1 he’d give us free drinks for life - we immediately shook on it so it seemed only fair to name ourselves after the pub.”
‘Love On My Mind’ came about due to an old Jackie Moore classic, ‘This Time Baby’ from Atlantic Records. “I’d wanted to use the sample for years,” says Russell. “I remember just after we’d finished it we bumped into loads of people that had all talked about using the sample but we got there first.”
So what’s next for Freemasons? “We’ve got a few more tracks in the pipeline for ’05,” says Russell. “We really didn’t want to just release a one-off so you’ll be hearing a lot more from us this year.”
