From the funk & bass of Infared’s ‘Capoeira’,
to the nuevo-flamenco of Rodrigo & Gabriela, from the
freestyle booty-lick of Rio hip hop outfit Stereo Maracana to the breakneck bossa
of Lennie Dale’s ‘The Lady Is A Tramp’, ‘Flavas’ is
the perfect example of how the Brazilian spirit has crept
into every nook and cranny of modern music.
In fact, in some areas (drum & bass
being a prime example) it's almost taken over certain genres,
made them something completely different, yet universally
recognised as Brazilian. Every track on this album has been
chosen for its relevance to the European dance and music
scene in one way or another, and although the set isn’t
designed for the total beginner (that would entail 37 versions
of the Girl From Ipanema and One Note Samba ), it certainly
isn’t aimed at the Brazil Anorak, either. You could
hear the Tim Maia re-rub, or Tejo & Co’s weird-and-wonderful
d&b-tinged gabba-funk in any top Sao Paulo club.
So on March 29th pour yourself a generous
Caipirinha, dust off your havaiannas and join the rest of
us wishing we were in Rio as ‘Essential Brazilian Flavas’ is
released on Stimulus..
