‘Channel Surfing’ by Catskills veteran Feature Cast is to be the first release on new offshoot label Catskills:Projects and features the legendary MC Kool Keith. Now I could be easily be biased, being a Kool Keith fan, to say that this track is really good but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t. As soon as you put it on it immediately goes into a thumping rhythm that is infectious, deep and solid. The break beats are relentless and guaranteed to hit those soles of your shoes.

There’s also a funky percussion sound that makes the rhythms groovy. It’s complimented cleverly by the use of horns, samples and excellent scratching to beef up the track. Kool Keith’s appearance is minimal but, as always, very effective.

There is a lot of this kind of music about these days and this track perhaps doesn’t hold the brooding dark mystery that DJ Shadow seems to be able to create, however it’s an uplifting progressive break-beat track that is instantly likeable.
