Nobody should need an introduction to any of the members
of this band:
Krist Novoselic (ex Nirvana)
Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets)
Bud Gaugh (sublime).
We all know all these guys excel when it comes to playing
their instruments, now all is to be seen is to how good
a group of songsmiths they are. I don't think Eyes Adrift
are interested in trying to "out-do" the previous
work any of there old bands produced, the goal seems to
be more of an exercise in satisfying their own musical tastes.
In the last year there seems to have been a total rush of
super groups & Eyes Adrift is just one of them, unlike
some of the others Eyes Adrift is of the mellow variety.
Alaska is Eyes Adrift first single and has a simplicity
to it that carries an essence of R E M. there are no real
highlights on the album, most of the tracks are down-beat
but with pleasing guitars & enjoyable melody. The album
sounds like a grower.
If you were to go and watch Eyes Adrift live I don't think
you would expect to see Krist dropping his Bass on his head
I think it would be more suitable to say you would see a
more chilled out 'unplugged' type performance. This album
is not really my cup of tea, but if you enjoy listening
to mellow alternative rock tainted with a tinge of country
then this album is definitely one you will enjoy. To sum
up the overall feel of the album, the mantra goes "the
days of grungerock are over, time to settle down and make
mature music to chill out to".
This debut is no master piece but it is most certainly
worthy of a listen.
