C/O/R/D - James, guitarist Mike Jackson, bassist Andrew Walsh and drummer Phil Davidson - have made a debut album seemingly recorded by three different bands from three different planets in three different decades.
There's the stonking great 90's desert rock band that resembles Queens Of The Stone Age on Dexedrine that play songs like 'Go Either Way' or 'Eyes'. There's the bassoons-out 00's orchestral pop combo that swoon Coldplayishly through 'Sea Of Trouble' or 'Give Me Today'. And there's the Muse-meets-Floyd galactic proggers that crash lands in the future direct from 1974 on sprawling psych-epics like first single 'Winter' or 'Stay With Me Now'.
The band claim every track on'Other People's Lives (Are Not As Perfect As They Seem)' is a true, and often tragic, story about them or people they know. "Happiness is in the small things," James muses. "I think maybe you only realise that when you're really rich. If people looked around at their lives then actually they might realise they'll look back on this time and think it was a really good time. But we're hard wired as human beings to not be able to appreciate our own happiness. I wrote the damn song but I find it really hard to do that. This album is just about life, the condition of living today. We're trying to understand it ourselves. And that makes for a really eclectic album because that's what life is like. Life is not all superfast exciting Camden punk pop and it's not all depressing Radiohead, it's a real mixed bag.
