The album shows quite a departure from the bands last two records with a wide range of influences shining through, from country and folk music to classic soul, blues, pop and r&b. With a lot of the songs
originally written on acoustic guitars, the recording was done over the last year and features autoharp, piano, congas, slide guitar, timpani’s, harmonica and even trombones.
“If we made another rock record, it would’ve been hard to find a new place to go because we’d thrown in the kitchen sink for our second album,” explains Been. “When
you listen to old records, from the Beach Boys to Beatles to Stones to Neil Young, it sounded like they were going by the seat of their pants a little bit,” says Hayes. “So that kinda became the guiding principle for this
record. It really sounded like those groups were having fun, never knowing where they were gonna land.”
