Just as Data releases its 100th release with Mish Mash's 'Speechless', the label is already lining up its next smash in the shape of 'BeatFreakz – Somebody's Watching Me' on May 1st.
Originally released in 1984 by Rockwell, 'Somebody's Watching Me' featured the vocal talent of a certain 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson. Sampling the eighties anthem, Hi_Tack, who produced the track's radio edit, loop up the vocal hook in an Eric Prydz style to create a slab of dancefloor genius. Already added to the Radio 1 upfront playlist seven weeks ahead of release, and with major support at Galaxy 105-6 and across the network, as well as additions at Vibe and Juice (Liverpool), this is already turning into a massive record. In true Data fashion BeatFreakz has already been championed by Judge Jules and Dave Pearce with plays on Radio 1, as well as picking up spins from tastemakers up & down the country.
The magic of BeatFreakz comes through the talents of remix and production duo, Hi_Tack, who are not shy of chart success themselves, having enjoyed weeks in the Top 10 recently with 'Say Say Say (Waiting For You). They are also the men behind the Klubbheads' 1996 top ten hit Klubbhopping. It's the Hi_Tack mix that provides the BeatFreakz with their massive radio friendly feel, with its beefed up basslines, euphoric breakdowns and a sprinkling of those oh-so familiar vocals. Other mixes comes from none other than Ian Carey, who strips things down for an electro workout and Dennis Christopher who fires things up in true Junior Jack stylee. Also be sure to check out legendary tech-trance don E-Craig, who's remix subjects the original to some tough tech love, guaranteed to rock the dancefloor.
Rockwell's original version crashed into the US top ten on its release, sparking a series of rumours as to whether it was really Michael Jackson singing the hook, and now here we are over 20 years later, asking the exact same question. Released on Detroit's infamous Motown label, it was only after the record was released that label boss Berry Gordy, and the rest of the world, were let in on the fact that Rockwell was in fact Kenneth William Gordy – Berry's son!
BeatFreakz are a trio of musical minds, who first got together on the outskirts of Amsterdam in 1999, when they set up their own studio complex. Each member of the act brings a different ingredient to the mix, from tech-trance stylings to studio experience and production expertise. Add to the mixture a generous dash of radio-friendly funk from Hi_Tack, and 'Somebody's Watching Me' looks set to be a hit once again in 2006.
Feel like somebody's watching you? Enjoy the flirtatious fun of the 'BeatFreakz – Somebody's Watching Me' released May 1st on Data Records. And failing that call the police.
