Nathaniel Anthony Ayers is a talented musician who's lost his way. Once a student at the most prestigious music college, Ayers is now washed up; living on the street with no place to call home, the only thing keeping him vaguely sane is his 2 stringed violin.

Steve Lopez is a renowned journalist who writers columns in the LA Times. When he discovers Ayers playing on the street, he decides to write about him, his talent, his dedication to music and what he's become. Throughout their meetings Ayers and Lopez kindle a friendship, everyday Ayres seems to drop a little further into his illness but the now with the help of Steve Lopez, he starts to get his life back.
