Set in New York, Paris, Cadaques, Mallorca and London Tom Kalin's film tells the true story of Barbara Daly (Julianne Moore) and her family. Barbara married into higher society to her husband Brooks Baekeland (Stephen Dillane), an inheritor of a huge fortune.

Barbara and Brooks only have one child, Tony (Eddie Redmayne), and Brooks ever increasingly feels his son is a failure, this only makes Barbara's and Tony's connection stronger. The story spans over 26 years of family life, through the best and worst times.
