Tom - Patrick Dempsey - has a great life. He's sexy, successful, has enormous luck with women, he always knows he can count on Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), his wonderful best friend and the one stable woman in his life, all is perfectly happy for Tom until Hannah goes out of the country on business to Scotland on a 6-week trip.

Tom is shocked to realise how unfilled his life is without Hannah. He decides that when she gets back, he will ask Hannah for her hand in marriage, his plan is floored when he finds out that she has become engaged to a handsome and wealthy Scotsman and plans to move overseas.

Hannah asks Tom to be her 'maid' of honour, he unenthusiastically says yes to fill the role but only so he can attempt to woo Hannah and stop the wedding before it's too late.
