Every sport (Murderball) or game or childhood activity (Spellbound) gets its
documentary, eventually. Here's Scrabble's turn at the bat, a surprisingly
lively look at four competitive players of the popular board game, which has a
tournament circuit worth $25,000 to the winner. As expected, our filmmakers
focus on four promising contenders, all of whom are oddballs -- from
acid-reflux-stricken Joel Sherman to Marlon Hill, who looks like a linebacker
and sneaks out during games to smoke pot outside. Amusing stuff, and if you've
ever been obsessed with a game of any kind (Scrabble or no), this film will be
a quick, fun way to reminisce about your compulsions. (Plus, it'll probably
make you a way better Scrabble player.)
Aka Word Wars - Tiles and Tribulations on the Scrabble Game Circuit.
