The handsome lad in the desert is Rudolph Valentino, the Affleck of his era and certainly a heartthrob no matter the decade. Notable mainly for Valentino's appearance, The Sheik still stands as one of the most epic silent films ever made, with a cast of thousands (well, hundreds, at least) on camelback, riding through a real desert and waging a large-scale war in the name of love. The main love story is typical of silents but its scope still stands out over 80 years after its original release. Film buffs positively must see it. Followed by Son of the Sheik.
