A direct-to-video thriller starring Treat Williams called Skeletons in the
Closet? I was scared before I ever pushed the play button, just not for the
right reasons.
Imagine my surprise to find a reasonably clever script hidden among the sappy
marketing copy ("Cross the threshold of fear!"), with Williams turning in a
credible performance as a dad who suspsects his son (Jonathan Jackson) is
murdering the hapless residents of his sleepy New Hampshire town. Or is it the
dad who's doing the crimes, trying to set up the son? Sure, the story isn't
exactly groundbreaking, but it is decently suspenseful and for the most part,
intelligent.
The main drawback to Skeletons in the Closet is its unfortunately pathetic
production values. The movie is shot on videotape, and little has been done to
hide this cost-saving measure. The video looks so bad, though, it comes across
as someone's home video -- not what most movies want to look like when you're
digging up bodies.
