I see a lot of bad movies, but Sanitarium is one of those films that truly
scrapes bottom, with no hope of recovery.
The very story is utter nonsense. Twenty years ago, a doctor gives an
experimental drug to a bunch of mental patients, and they are miraculously
cured. The patients who receive no drug, though, go totally bonkers. End of
experiment. Flash to present, repeat.
I'm not a scientist but I took plenty of it in college -- enough to know that
this story is about as sane as those mental patients. And although someone
spent a lot of money to rent out a real sanitarium, the shot-on-video, 80
minute production is so amateur you'll find yourself going crazy trying to
suffer through it. You want a solid video shot in a looney bin? Check out
Session 9. Not even Uri Gellar can save the movie.
There's not even much gore and there are certainly no thrills to be had in this
dog. When the audio cut out about 10 minutes before the end of the movie, I
didn't know if that was the movie being stylish or if there was a problem with
the DVD. Then I realized I didn't even care.
Sanitarium... I'll be checking out.
