Roadkill Review

The only way to make the road trip even stranger is to have it take place in Canada.

Following in the tradition of such odd traveling yarns as Jim Jarmusch's Down by Law comes Bruce McDonald's (Hard Core Logo) low-budget rock and roll odyssey.

The plot's beyond simple: Ramona (Valerie Buhagiar) is tasked with tracking down a missing rock band who's about to botch the last show in the tour. Along the way she encounters an increasingly bizarre collection of characters, and coming out of her shell as she does. The most memorable part of the trip is undoubtedly Don McKellar (seen here before he found a hair style that worked for him), playing Russel, a serial killer wannabe who knows everything there is to know about his chosen profession, yet hasn't managed to start his killing spree yet. He talks a good game, though.

Too bad there's no sense of character movement to go along with Ramona's literal movement -- it's just a wild ride along Canadian backroads, in gritty black and white, just slipping along the asphalt until we find a rock concert waiting for us in the end.
