My Life with Morrissey Movie Review

Not being a Morrissey fan, I figured I wasn't exactly the target audience for this film. But since My Life with Morrissey is not really about Morrissey and features none of his music, I was actually in the clear! Crisis averted from frame one.

Andrew Overtoom was a Spongebob Squarepants director. This was his side gig, produced as he was wrapping up work for the show following its cancellation. (Who knew this was cancelled in 2002!?) I guess when you make a TV show about a talking sponge, something screwy happens with your brain. Something like this, about an obsessed Morrissey fan (Jackie Buscarino), who, in the film's most memorable scene, becomes convinced that Morrissey is waiting to screw her behind an L.A. hot dog stand.

Obsessed fan, living with big Morrissey posters on the wall... that's one thing. That's almost cute and definitely cliched. Obsessed fan who stages a wedding, humps a sex doll with Morrissey's face taped to its head, and gets gang-raped by a bunch of lesbian bikers... well, that's another thing altogether. This is one hell of a ride through psychosis (funny psychosis, funny!), and the cute/scary Jackie Buscarino carries the difficult lead role admirably.

Obviously constrained by a low budget, Overtoom takes his financial limitations and uses them to generate a film so absurd that you can't help but love it. A motorcycle crash near the end of the film is indicated by a nuclear detonation. That blow-up doll does double duty when Jackie gets tossed into the street... and run over by a bicycle.

It's a strange and quite memorable ride, even if you couldn't care less about Morrissey.
