There's only one reason to check out this god-awful conflagration of western
and horror movie, Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter, and that's the
legendary Joe Bob Briggs doing his thing on a commentary track, the first of a
line of Joe Bob-anchored DVDs from legendary Elite Entertainment.
The title pretty much tells the story, as two historical characters -- one
real, one fantasy -- collide in an awful mess of a plot that has Jesse James
seeking medical help for his shooting buddy from the most unlikely doctor in
town. The story, the acting, the dialogue -- it's all a mess, and it's only
Joe Bob's commentary track that salvages anything from this production.
The drawback is that there's not much here for Joe Bob to riff on (he dissected
I Spit on Your Grave with far more aplomb). Jesse James is just a sad sad
horror movie, with no cultural relevance, nothing particularly interesting
regarding filmmaking or even B-movie history (except that a ton of people died
after it was made). Joe Bob is even -- for maybe the first time in his life --
silent, for short stretches of film. When he is riffing, it's interesting, but
it's hardly the cruel dissection that he's done on other commentary tracks.
The star rating is for the film; add two stars if you switch to audio track 2.
