"It waits?" That's supposed to scare us? What, is it sitting at a red light?
Did it go to the post office? Is it taking the day off work so the cable guy
can come by?
Whoa.
It Waits is not a terribly made film, but as horror it's awfully uneventful.
The story's pretty staid: There's a remote cabin of mountain rangers, notably
an emotionally wrecked and alcoholic Danny St. Claire (Cerina Vincent), and
before long a manimal kind of creature starts ripping rangers and campers to
shreds, leaving Danny all the more messed up. Before long we figure this is all
going to end up with Danny in the mental ward, that none of it was real, but
fortunately that doesn't happen. The "It" is real, based on some native
American legend (though the Wendigo has already been done), and it just likes
to feed on people. The explanation comes late in the movie: It feeds off of
negative emotions (or something like that), though strangely, it leaves alive
the woman that is actually having all these negative emotions, presumably
because of her huge breasts.
I found myself reminded of Jeepers Creepers throughout the film, and I almost
can't bear to say that that is a much better film. Those are words I didn't
really think would ever come out of my mouth. Fortunately, Vincent can hold her
own as an actress, at least against a guy with a rubber suit and multiple vials
of fake blood. The rest of the cast doesn't survive long enough to make much of
an impression about. That's probably for the best.
I'll leave you with one last comment about It Waits. Ironically, in this film,
the "it" doesn't "wait" at all. It runs all over the mountain tearing things
apart. Discuss among yourselves.
