There's no denying that Neil Young has lost his mind somewhere in the last decade, Still that doesn't quite explain Greendale, an experimental film that Young created to go along with the CD of the same name. There's no dialogue, the characters in the film move their lips to the lyrics -- though everyone oddly has a voice just like Neil Young. And it's all singing, of course. The result is an uninspired and partially nonsensical ode to Neil Young, by Neil Young, in which he waxes liberal-like about outsiders infiltrating his make-believe town and eventually wanders into Enron bellyaching and Alaskan protectionism. The video accompanying all this is alternately cheap video and (likely) 8mm stock. Young's heart is in the right place, but delivering his message in such a half-assed manner may get even his most fervent supporters to run away screaming.
