Eight Days a Week Movie Review

Keri "Felicity" Russell would probably rather forget she made this movie back at the start of her career, but she did, and now Warner Brothers, which owns it, figures you'll pay to see the sad start to what became a budding and quite capable actress.

Eight Days a Week is essentially a teen sex comedy designed for underdog geeks. Joshua Schaefer plays Peter, a square high school senior who is smitten with the girl next door, the trollopy yet pretty Erica (Russell). Only problem is Erica has a brutish boyfriend, and she rightfully thinks Peter is a tool. So Peter does the only sensible thing he can imagine: He vows to spend the summer camped out in Erica's front lawn, where she's sure to notice him eventually.

Oddly, Erica's parents don't seem to mind, though, but Erica uses Peter only to catch her when she jumps out the window each night to go frolic with her jerk of a boyfriend.

Think they'll end up together? And what of Peter's sex-obsessed friend, who screws watermelons and tries auto-fellatio? And there's a lady down the way that tries to seduce kids (not in a creepy way, of course). And a lot of crazy neighbors. All of whom are designed to fill in the 100 minutes it takes to tell a movie about a dude camping in a girl's front yard.

Russell's performance here is shallow and uninteresting, though freak fans will marvel at the fact that she appears braless, wet, or in her underwear for the bulk of the film. Schaefer is even more forgettable, but it's the script that no one is going to dig: In any rational world, Peter would have been carted off by the cops within a day instead of camping there for three months. Which might have made the length of this film a bit more appropriate, too.
