I love to laugh at people with mental illnesses as much as the next guy, but
watching them have problems with their love life? That's where I draw the line.
But seriously, Dirty Filthy Love is a generally engaging and sometimes funny
look at how society's dysfunctionals get by in a world of romance, despite
their proclivity to bark like wild dogs. Michael Sheen's Mark has both
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Tourette's Syndrome -- though somehow he made
it to the top of the architecture field and landed a gorgeous wife while
yelling fuck! tits! at everyone.
Love finds Mark losing his job and his wife and finally exploring group therapy
while he tries to put his life back together. Despite the ministrations of
Charlotte (Shirley Henderson, best known for being "Moaning Myrtle" in the
Harry Potter movies and for having a name that combines two great TV actress
"moms" who greatly resemble each other but look nothing like this Shirley),
Mark doesn't much improve. Before long he looks like a hobo and he's worse than
ever.
Dirty Filthy Love isn't exactly a serious look at mental illness (and it seems
to give Mark whatever tic the script needs at any given time, never mind the
science), but that's OK. It's reasonably fun, even if it is almost morbidly
depressing. Sheen is a revelation as the loser lover. His come-on line to
Charlotte ("Nice tits.") is alone worth the price of a rental.
