To ignore the mullet is to ignore America -- so in case you're completely out
of the loop, the mullet is a hairdo defined quite simply: short on top, long in
back. Aka the sho-lo, the style is popular among a few subcultures: lesbians,
country stars (and aging rockers), and, apparently, middle America freaks.
Director Jennifer Arnold interviews dozens of mullet-wearers who love the 'do
along with a handful of hairdressers who condemn the thing. The mullet, it
seems, isn't just a hairdo, it's a state of mind -- and as Arnold shows us,
that state is probably right up there with people who wear Star Trek uniforms
to work.
Unfortunately, there's not a lot of additional insight except for some
good-natured fun-poking at the hairstyle that launched Michael Bolton into
stardom. On DVD, it's a quick 52 minutes that are soon forgotten. I checked
out the extras and found the tale of one mullet-owner's cardboard motor scooter
more interesting than anything that found its way into the final cut.
Aka The Mullet Chronicles.
