What's a farthing? Well in old Britain, it was a quarter of a penny. Not a
hell of a lot.
What's a kid? Well in this case, it's a baby goat with a misshapen horn... and
our little hero Joe (Jonathan Ashmore, in his sole film role) thinks that kid's
a unicorn. Or as he screeches endlessly, "A you-neeeee-corn!!!!"
Emphasis on the corn... as Joe scrapes up the two farthings (the movie is set
in a London ghetto) and buys the goat, then starts wishing for countless
things, a few of which seem to come true thanks to the youneeeeecorn's powers.
He wants to go on a trip to the park. His mom takes him on a trip to the
dentist. Well, half-true, he figures. In the end, he wishes for the local
honey Sonia to get an engagement ring and for her boyfriend to beat Primo
Carnera in a wrestling match. Did I mention there's a magic goat in this movie?
Folks, it doesn't get much weirder than this, and one has to wonder if David
Lynch tried making a family film if it wouldn't come out a bit like this one.
It's mostly harmless and very encouraging of fantasy in youth. That Ashmore
though is quite the shrieker. If you don't already have kids -- er, children
-- his constant yelling isn't going to make you want to run off for fertility
treatments. And if you do have kids, rest assured they'll be bored silly by the
movie.
