At least it wasn't hideous... but this Beloved-esque tale of a white plantation owner (Waterston) in Lincoln-era Georgia who has a mixed-race daughter (Beals) by one of his slaves (Hamilton) is so dull it stifles what little energy there is in the story. When the big guy dies, his will -- which leaves almost everything to the daughter -- is contested. Will it stand up against bigotry? Ultimately, it's challenging material made dumb... you know, for Showtime.

This was on cable in UK 30 November. I landed on it by chance but was glued to
all of it. I used to take an interest in a Jamaican/English woman and her two
lovely children and the whole story was very real for me. Lisagay Hamilton was
marvellous, playing young girl-to-45 year old. My friend is killing herself
with drink, smoking, effects of prostitution, being beaten up, and fights with
other girls. She will die soon. But last night I saw a great actress.
