101 ways? I only count two: waitressing and being a phone sex operator.
Jennifer B. Katz's lighthearted fable about love and bankruptcy is amusing and
lightly entertaining, though its heroine Watson (Wendy Hoopes, best known as
the voice of Jane and Quinn on MTV's Daria) isn't entirely sympathetic.
When she isn't making eyes at the local grocery store cashier (Glenn
Fitzgerald), poor Watson is trying to make ends meet. She can't hold a job --
whether that's waitressing or phone sex -- and mom won't help her out. Oh, and
she wants to be a writer -- original, huh?
And there you have the movie 101 Ways in a nutshell. Not terribly empowering,
not terribly funny, not terrible believable, and almost wholly inoffensive,
Hoopes and Katz don't generate much emotion but they make us giggle from time
to time. It's a fair enough entry into the slacker genre of filmmaking, though
its pretty much unmemorable.
