Apple already offers the entire EMI catalog and other music DRM-free on the iTunes store. It is Universal themselves who refuses so far to sell their catalog DRM-free on iTunes. We'll just have to see whether Universal's ploy is going to suck people away from the ease-of-use of using iTunes to fill the 100 million iPods out there or not. -Mart

Huh? Apple has been selling music without DRM for some time now. Not music from Universal, because Universal will not let them.

I thought it was Apple who muted or challenged the music companies to issue music without DRM? Basically, Apple has no choice whether or not to use DRM. That is part of the terms of the contract between Apple and the music providers. Universal merely wants to be vindictive and try to destry Apple's business model because Apple refused to tie the economics of music sale to the sale of iPod units.
