Bill Callahan must have the glassest bones america / the world has produced in a long time. at its most simple, smog draws on the guitar-wracking blues funk of classic americana and variously combines sampled noise, scratchy strings, moe-tucker-drumming (country-style) and beautiful piano arrangements. the latest smog record - currently knock knock - is a full size winner. touch, feelings, and memories swim wild in a river of bill's choosing. and with songs as drawn-out as these you've got plenty of time to think about what might be brushing past your legs. part pointedly world-wise, part star wars kid on the block, smog and his guitar could take on anyone and turn up at least half of the trumps. anyone, that is, who has even fallen underneath the spell of a few well-placed words and some choice riffing.
