Goldfrapp Biography
Goldfrapp are Alison Goldfrapp - composer, vocalist, whistler, yodeller, and keyboardist with Will Gregory - composer, keyboardist, string and brass arranger. Their story began when Alison Goldfrapp, commenced an exploration of the creative possibilities inherent in music while studying for a degree in Fine Art at Middlesex University. Alison's reputation as a hugely creative talent with a highly distinctive voice resulted in her appearance on a
number of albums by cutting-edge artists while she was still studying. She provided vocals for tracks on electronic duo Orbital's "Snivilisation" LP (1994) as well as her friend Tricky's 1995 debut "Maxinquaye" touring with him to promote the work. Her name also appeared on Add N to X's "Avant Hard" (1999) too, before Alison opted to pursue a solo career. After beginning to write her own compositions, one of her friends passed on some of her demos to composer Will Gregory who immediately recognised their mutual passion for heartbreaking melodies, electronic experimentation and the sweep of cinematic soundscapes. Keen to work together they formed the wonderfully eclectic Goldfrapp and recorded their debut long player over a five-month period in a bungalow deep in the remote Wiltshire countryside in late 1999, releasing it as 'Felt Mountain' on Mute in 2000.
