Biography

New Kids On The Block (formed 1984-1995, 2008-present) New Kids On The Block are an American boy band from Boston, Massachusetts, consisting of Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood, as well as previously including Mark Wahlberg and Jaime Kelley.

Formation: Maurice Starr decided to form a band called Nyunk as a white equivalent to the band New Edition. Auditions were held in Boston, with Donnie Wahlberg becoming the first person to get into the band and then bringing in his brother, Mark Wahlberg, and friends Danny Wood and Jordan Knight. Mark Wahlberg left the group after a short amount of time to be replaced by Jamie Kelly, however Kelly was kicked out in favour of Joey McIntyre.

Starr continued to act as their manager as the band were signed to Columbia Records, changing their name to New Kids On The Block, taking their name from one of the songs from their debut album.

Career: In 1986, New Kids On The Block released their self-titled debut studio album to poor reviews and little success. The band chose to release 'Please Don't Go Girl' which initially saw little success until it was played on a Florida radio station and shot up to number 10 in the charts.

On 6th September 1988, they released their second studio album, 'Hangin' Tough', to better reviews and chart success, topping Billboard's 200 list. The following year on 19th September 1989, the band released a Christmas album entitled 'Merry, Merry Christmas'. The album received moderate reviews and reached the ninth spot on Billboard's 200 list. The band released their third studio album, 'Steph By Step', on 5th June 1990 with mixed to poor reviews, yet it once again topped Billboard's 200 list and sold almost 20 million copies.

This led to Forbes listing the band members as the highest paid entertainers of 1991, beating Madonna and Michael Jackson. In 1993, the band and manager Maurice Starr split, and released their fourth studio album 'Face the Music' on 25th January 1994. While it received moderate reviews, it only reached the 37th spot on Billboard's 200 list. The failure led to Jonathan Knight choosing to leave the band, with New Kids On The Block officially splitting up in 1995.

In 2008, the band revealed that they were planning a reunion and would have an album and tour to celebrate. The album, entitled 'The Block', received tremendously mixed reviews, ranging from brilliant to poor, yet it came second on Billboard's 200 list. In 2012, the band were nominated for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, before releasing their sixth studio album, '10', which received positive reviews and reached the sixth spot on Billboard's 200 list. Their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was installed on 9th October 2014.

Aerosmith, New Kids On The Block Rock TD Garden For Boston Benefit

Aerosmith New Kids On The Block Jason Aldean Dane Cook

The Boston Strong benefit for the victims of the marathon bombings last month has only been in the works for a few weeks. In that time, the event team managed to pull together a star-studded lineup, from Aerosmith to New Kids On The Block, all performing for free. The venue – TD Garden - and even Ticketmaster.com also waived all fees in the spirit of charity. Somehow, Boston Strong worked and it worked well, with barely any time to organize. Acts included some proud Bostonians, as well as acts, who just performed out of solidarity for the city’s people. Acts like Jason Aldean, Dane Cook, James Taylor and Aerosmith, who flew in from Singapore, the latest stop in their tour, just to participate, reports Reuters.

“To say everyone is checking their ego at the door is a cliche, but it’s true,” said New Kid Donnie Wahlberg for Boston.com. “To walk down the hallway and bump into Carole King and have her say ‘Thank you. Your city is so great. . . . There’s no place for rock star attitudes tonight.”

The sole reason behind the concert was helping Boston and its citizens move on, and it looks like the event has been a huge success. At prices between $35 and $285, tickets had been sold out for weeks for the 17,500-seat venue, with net proceeds to be donated to The One Fund and, through it, victims of the bombing.

Benefit For Boston Victims Will Include Aerosmith And New Kids On The Block

Aerosmith New Kids On The Block James Taylor Dane Cook

A number of musicians and comedians – the list so far includes Aerosmith, New Kids On The Block, James Taylor, Dane Cook and a number of others - have signed on to perform in the upcoming benefit for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. The tragedy, which took place on April 15, claimed the lives of three people and left many more injured. However, in the aftermath of the blast, the world saw unprecedented acts of kindness and compassion from Bostonians and visitors. Now, the entertainers, some of them Boston natives themselves, hope to do their part as well.

Boston's own NKOTB member Donnie Wahlberg revealed to MTV, "Like so many other proud Bostonians who have been extremely generous, we are honored to step up and do our part to help the victims and their families. Hopefully this event will not only raise money, but spirits as well."

Boston Strong: An Evening of Support and Celebration will take place on May 30 at TD Garden and ticket sales will benefit charity organisation The One Fund and through that – the victims and those affected by the explosions. Some other confirmed performers so far include J. Geils Band, Godsmack, Extreme, Steven Wright, Jason Aldean, Jimmy Buffett, and Carole King, but the list is sure to expand as the night of the benefit approaches.

The band’s two remaining members (Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes died in a car crash in 2002), Rozonda ‘Chili’ Thomas and Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watzins will play the second day of the festival. Jonathan Knight Apologises For Ducking Out On NKOTB Concert

New Kids On The Block

After New Kids On The Block’s Jonathan Knight had to step down during a live performance last night, the performer apologized to fans via Twitter.

The tweet was a short one, but Knight’s followers rallied in support of the singer. “I’m sorry,” tweeted Knight from the side of the stage, as his bandmates continued the performance. The NKOTB member has long been struggling with anxiety – a condition, which, while it has been gaining more awareness of late, still isn’t very talked about in the entertainment industry. That’s unfortunate, considering that anxiety disorders are the most common type of mental disorder in the US, affecting roughly 40 million adults.

According to Hollywood Life, Knight was clearly struggling throughout the parts of the show he managed to perform. After hanging back for two songs, he returned for Step By Step,” “Hangin’ Tough” and “The Right Stuff.” However, it clearly wasn’t working out, since the singer left the show stage straight afterwards and the remaining members of NKOTB had to finish the concert without him.

New Kids On The Block To Hang Tough With Boyz II Men And 98 Degrees On Tour

New Kids On The Block Boyz II Men 98 Degrees

Their dance moves are more shuffles nowadays, their harmonies harNOnies, but New Kids On The Block have enjoyed a surprising amount of success since returning in 2007 – and, buoyed by that, they’ve decided to take all of their pals from American boy band past on tour with them.

That’s right, best start taking your underwear off to throw in advance – maybe buy another pair of underwear too and take them off as well – New Kids On The Block are going on tour with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees. In fairness to the former, they’ve continued to record way after their commercial heyday of the 90’s, and lest we forget they are the most successful selling R&B group of all time. 98 Degrees though… really!? Not only were they from another generation of boy bands – turning up in the late 90’s as opposed the late 80’s – their chart success was fleeting. Three albums between 1997 and 2000, although we have to hand it to them for seemingly bowing out at the top – a second spot Billboard chart placing for Revelation. However, it’d be far fetched to say anyone had really remembered who they were, never mind miss them.

Nevertheless, they join these other two one-time gargantuans of the music industry for a 28 date tour through the US that kicks off on May 31, 2013 in Connecticut, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Lawsuit Against The Backstreet Boys And New Kids On The Block Dismissed

Backstreet Boys New Kids On The Block

A lawsuit against the boybands The Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block has been dismissed, after the two groups were blamed by a stagehand, who fractured his skull after falling before one of their concerts.

According to TMZ, the stagehand, named William Wesley Styron, tried to sue both boybands for $5 million for alleged injuries he says he sustained when he fell through a hole in the stage prior to a 2011 concert. Styron claims to have fractured his skull and suffered brain trauma as a result of the fall, and holds NKOTBSB and other parties responsible for the alleged damage he sustained.

The lawsuit was brought forward in July this year, after which NKOTBSB vehemently denied the allegations, claiming it wasn't their fault Styron failed to see the gaping hole in front of him. Now, with the matter out of the courts, it seems that they weren't the only ones who thought this, as the presiding judge agreed, ruling that responsibility for the fall actually lies with the production company who hired him and not the two bands.
