If you're sharing your Netflix account amongst friends and family, you may be facing a price change
Netflix have risen to become the go-to streaming service. Gone are the days of renting from Blockbuster or posting back DVDs to LoveFilm; the red of Netflix now dominates the market with original programming and instant, readily available content.
Part of their success, aside from Breaking Bad and House of Cards – not to mention Arrested Development, has been a consistent pricing plan; but could this be about to change, and if it does, who will it affect?
Currently, the service costs U.S users $7.99 a month, with U.K users shelling out £5.99 a month. Under the new pricing plan, which is in beta mode at the moment, users would pay $4.99 a month for streaming to one screen, but $9.99 a month for the same service with three simulations screens.
This means the days of lending over your Netflix account details are over, and you shouldn’t have been doing it anyway. In the U.K, services like Sky Go have specific rules about the amount of devices you can use with your account, but Netflix are yet to implement a limit.
Currently, multiple users can be added to one account, meaning recommendations and recently watched items aren’t messed up with different people watching different things, but that could be about to change with the multiple screen pricing plan set to be tested in America. If it works and works well, we could see it rolling out to everyone.
"Not everyone will see this and we may not ever offer it generally," a Netflix spokesman told the BBC. "Typically tests take anywhere from several weeks to several months. Whether we roll out any of these options depends on the test results."
Chris Green, an analyst with consultancy firm Davies Murphy Group, thinks allowing customers to chose different price points will prove popular.
"There will be demand from technologically adept families who are frustrated by only being able to run two concurrent streams", he said. "But there will also be households that won't mind getting a cheaper deal as the cost of these products can add up month by month."
