Former South Africa president Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for a recurring bout of pneumonia.

The beloved ex-leader, 94, was hospitalised last month (27Mar13) with an infection of the lungs and had fluid drained from them during his stay in a local medical centre.

However, he was allowed to leave doctors' care on Saturday (06Apr13) to continue his recovery at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg.

A statement issued by a spokesperson for current President Jacob Zuma's office reads, "Former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital... following a sustained and gradual improvement in his general condition.

"The former president will now receive home-based high care. President Zuma thanks the hard working medical team and hospital staff for looking after (Mandela) so efficiently."
