Whilst many loved his rendition of the evil Count Olaf and enjoyed the flick, it wasn't the best-received movie, and those interested soon learned that its first big screen outing would also be its last.

Can Neil Patrick Harris Unlock The Secret To Hosting The Oscars?

Neil Patrick Harris Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Neil Patrick Harris is the latest personality entrusted with the difficult, risky and often downright stupid responsibility of hosting the biggest night in movies, the Oscars. Such is the emphasis placed on the host of the Academy Awards, it often shapes the reporting, live-blogging and most of the reaction to the ceremony, with the nominees left as an afterthought.

Neil Patrick HarrisNeil Patrick Harris will host the Oscars in February

The Academy have struggled to find an appropriate host in recent years. Seth MacFarlane was smug, James Franco and Anne Hathaway were a disaster, Billy Crystal seemed past it and Ellen DeGeneres was.well, fine. And so Neil Patrick Harris - a notable stage performer with the likeability factor - is next up to try and replicate the likes of Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and Crystal of yesteryear. That is, to glide effortlessly in-and-out of the ceremony. To be funny when they need to be. To keep things moving.

Neil Patrick Harris's Career Reinvention Continues With Hedwig On Broadway

Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris might be best known as Barney Stinson, the legendary playboy from ‘How I Met Your Mother’, but currently the actor is reinventing himself on Broadway as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Itch. You might have tales stories of him swearing at an audience member, but that was far from the really story to come out of the show’s opening week. Harris is earning rave reviews in the musical which, whilst being anything but traditional, is currently rocking up a storm on Broadway.

If you’re not familiar with Hedwig and the Angry Itch, some background information is definitely necessary. With music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Itch made its off-Broadway debut in 1998. Taking influence from the 70’s glam rock era and its large than life stars, such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop. The musical tells the story of Hedwig, an East German transsexual who after suffering a botched sex change operation, goes on to front a rock band, named The Angry Itch. The musical’s initial off-Broadway run lasted for 857 performances and it would go on to be staged all over the world, including in London’s West End and even as far afield a Brazil. In 2001 actor John Cameron Mitchell brought Hedwig to the big screen, acting and directing in the film adaptation. For his performance in the lead role Mitchell was nominated for the Golden Globe award for best actor in a musical or comedy.

There'll be How I Met Your Mother fans with knots in their stomach all day today as they wait anxiously for the final episode of the hit CBS sitcom. It has been a long road for the comedy show which by tonight will have run its course over nine seasons. When "HIMYM" debuted back in the fall of 2005, no one could have predicted the consistent success and comedic legacy of such a simple premise: a man in 2030 telling his two kids the tale of how he met their mother.

An entire series told in flashbacks, HIMYM only revealed the identity of "the mother" at the end of series eight, played by Cristin Milioti. Certain signals from her interaction with Ted (Josh Radnor) lead fans to believe that the mother actually is dead in 2030, and that's why the dad is reminiscing with his kids. This rumour was quickly played down by the cast but shows a keenness amongst fans for a "legen-dary" twist to top of their favourite show.

Ashton Kutcher Crowned Highest Paid Actor On TV For Second Year Running

Ashton Kutcher Jon Cryer Angus T. Jones Ray Romano Neil Patrick Harris Mark Harmon Patrick Dempsey Tim Allen Charlie Sheen

Ashton Kutcher has topped the list of Highest Paid Actors in Television for a second year running, earning an estimated $24 million over the course of June 2012 and June 2013, according to Forbes Magazine. The star of the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men has made most of his money from his role on the Chuck Lorre show, as well as a considerable amount from his role as Steve Jobs in the biopic about the late Apple co-founder.

Like the man he portrayed in the flop biopic, Kutcher also has a keen business sense, and has made some of his millions by investing in a number of emerging businesses. The Jobs actor has stakes in tech companies Airbnb, Foursquare and Path, however it is his role as billionaire Walden Schmitt that has earned him the largest chunk of his impressive yearly earnings. The Forbes estimate does not take into account any of his business earnings, only what he has earned through the entertainment industry.

Kutcher's Two and a Half Men co-star Jon Cryer also made the list, coming in at second with an estimated $21 million in earnings between 2012 and 2013. Angus T. Jones, who is no longer a series regular after a video of him condemning the show as "filth" emerge online, also made the list thanks to his role on the show. Although his stint as a regular on the series has since ended, having recently been replaced by Amber Tamblyn as a series regular, Jones is still likely to make a considerable amount of regular income thanks to the show's syndication.

Ashton Kutcher Tops The List Of Highest Paid Actors On TV

Ashton Kutcher Jon Cryer Angus T. Jones Ray Romano Mark Harmon Neil Patrick Harris

Ashton Kutcher may have overseen a significant drop in ratings on Two & A Half Men since it's Charlie Sheen-starring heyday, but that hasn't stopped him from reaping in the cash and becoming the highest paid actor on television. According to the latest Forbes Magazine list, the actor made $24 million over the course of June 2012 and June 2013 from his work on the Chuck Lorre show, making him the top earner on TV.

Kutcher's co-stars Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones are both on the list too, with Cryer coming in at number two, earning an estimated $21 million over the course of last year, whilst Jones is seventh with $11 million. With the show now in syndication and looking like it won't be ending any time soon, CBS's cash cow looks as though is will continue being milked by the lead actors for some time to come. Even though this will likely be Jones' final season on the show, he will still benefit financial from the show's syndication.

Ray Romano comes in third, still earning millions from the syndication of Everybody Loves Raymond and for his voice work on the Ice Age films. He also received a hefty paycheque for his story arc on Parenthood.

'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2' Scoffs At US Box Office Competition

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, despite receiving mixed reviews, has gained over $34 million at the US weekend Box Office. The film was released on Friday (27th September), and received mixed, although generally positive reviews. Some critics described the film as "wildly cute" and "colourful" (Miriam Bale, New York Times), but many felt the film lack originality particularly the "the original film's intelligence" (Sean O'Connell, Washington Post).

However, such comments do not appear to have discouraged many from seeing the second instalment in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise, quite the contrary as the film beat off its competition by at least $20 million. The other films in the Box Office are more equally spread, figures wise, with Prisoners (down from No.1 last week) and Rush (up from No.38) each gaining $10 million.

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler Steal The Show At The Emmys, Taking Over Neil Patrick Harris' Opening Speech

Tina Fey Amy Poehler Neil Patrick Harris Kevin Spacey

The Emmys came and went and brought with them a plethora of funny, embarrassing and just plain meh moments. Neil Patrick Harris’ opening speech never fails to win a few laughs, as it did again this time, but it was really the golden duo – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – who stole the show. About five minutes into Harris’ speech, Poehler and Fey, clearly inspired by recent events at the VMAs began hollering at the host. But of course, the bit – hilarious in our humble opinion - didn’t come without some proper build-up.

Tina Fey, Primetime Emmy Awards
Though the stage was populated by men, it was the ladies who mostly dominated the opening bit.

Two things became clear during Harris’ showdown with a flock of past Emmy presenters – Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and of course, the omniscient Conan O’Brian. Number one: in 2013 more than ever, broadcast television has some major competition in the media landscape and two: everyone is perfectly aware. While the presenters battled it out on stage, in the audience, Kevin Spacey turned to the camera for his own nefarious monologue.

Did Cory Monteith Deserve An Emmys Tribute? Awards 'In Memoriam ' Defended

Cory Monteith Lea Michele Neil Patrick Harris

Few would argue that the death of Glee actor Cory Monteith was not one of the most high profile, widely publicised celebrity losses of the year. The 31 year-old star was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room back in July after what was found to be an overdose involving a deadly cocktail of heroin and alcohol. Monteith enjoyed a relatively short but bright career as one of the TV show's central characters whose on screen relationship with Lea Michele mirrored their real lives.

Cory Monteith's Death Came As A Shock To Many.

Tributes still flood in for the star, the cast and crew are said to be devastated and Michele has barely been seen in public since: Cory's absence left a deep wound. Therefore it was probably fitting that this year's 65th Emmy Awards would make the decision to include a special tribute to Monteith in their annual 'In Memoriam' section ahead of Glee's official tribute episode when the new series starts airing next month.

Tyler Perry David Fincher Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike Neil Patrick Harris

Tyler Perry is the latest in a long list of big-names to be cast in the upcoming thriller from David Fincher; Gone Girl. The adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel of the same name already features a strong cast, including Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck in the main starring roles, and given Fincher's history of hiring the exact actor needed for a role, Perry's addition will hopefully be a fruitful one. Flynn is also writing the screenplay.

Wow; you are witnessing history here. We’re pretty sure this is a first for film: The Smurfs 2 is actually worse than The Smurfs. That’s right, the sequel to the 2011 3D animation of those iconic mini blue people has outdone its predecessor, by being awful.

Katy PerryKaty Perry probably hasn't even read the reviews

We’re not being mean, not by any means. In fact, we’re not even talking about our review. These are the critics talking, and they’ve submitted a mauling for Katy Perry and Nel Patrick Harris’ latest efforts.

Neil Patrick Harris To Make His Return To Broadway In 'Hedwig And The Angry Inch'

Neil Patrick Harris

After yet another successful job of hosting the Tony Awards, Neil Patrick Harris has finally found another job on Broadway other than presenting the annual awards gala for American theatre. The How I Met Your Mother-star will be appearing in the upcoming production of the rock opera Hedwig And the Angry Inch, in which the actor will play the East German transgender singer of the fake rock group.

Harris announced his return to Broadway for the first time since appearing in a 2004 revival of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins in a statement release don Monday (June 17). The actor, who has just turned forty, will star in John Cameron Mitchell's cult favourite at the Main Stem when it premieres in Spring 2014. Harris said in his statement that he is "simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig's heels. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the journey."

The play, which was adapted for the screen in 2001, follows the story of an East German transexual named Hansel who marries an American soldier and has a sex change to become a woman so that s/he can escape their traumatic past. The operation ends in failure and Hansel, who takes up the name Hedwig, is left genitalia-less and soon husbandless too, living in a trailer park in Junction City, Kansas at the same time the Berlin wall collapses and Germany is reunified. Hedwig then goes on to form the band Hedwig & The Angry Inch as they go out to find fame, fortune and retribution for the ills that have fallen before him in the past.

The Tonys Were Back In Full Force On Sunday And So Was Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris

Well, we knew the Tonys were going to be big, but Neil Patrick Harris went and made it even bigger. His opening number for last night’s ceremony had it all – Matilda, Spider-Man, Kinky Boots, a couple of playful jabs at Shia LaBeouf and Les Mis – the movie, not the Broadway show, of course. There was even a nod to Tom Hanks. No, wait, there was even… wait for it… Mike Tyson. Yes, the former boxing champ actually came out on stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and sang an entire verse, before handing it over to NPH (Go, Neil, go!) for the rest of the complicated, multi-stage number (which Harris apparently learned in half an hour.) You can check out the video of the stunning performance below.

'The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre' AKA The 67th Annual Tony Awards were held last night (9th June) at NYC's Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris for the fourth time (Barney in How I Met Your Mother).

The evening was a joyous affair as comedy, song, dance, and good showmanship combined to honour the best of the year's musical theatrical productions.

Described as "high-spirited" yet "tender hearted" by USA Today, Kinky Boots took on main rival RSC's Matilda The Musical and came out on a high (heel) to win 'Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role In A Musical' (for Billy Porter's performance), 'Best Choreography', 'Best Sound Design Of A Musical', 'Best Original Score (Music And/Or Lyrics) Written For The Theatre' (score by Cyndi Lauper) and, the biggest gong of the night: the coveted 'Best Musical' award.

Tony Awards Keep Getting Bigger And Better With Each Year

Neil Patrick Harris Scarlett Johansson Tom Hanks

The Tony awards are approaching! This year’s award show, to be held this Sunday at Radio City Music Hall, is sure to hold a lot of surprises and a lot of amazing performances. Starting with the venue itself – the Tony’s return this year to their rightful home in RCMH after two years at the Beacon Theatre. This of course means a bigger venue, a bigger stage and plenty more space for those clever producers to work their magic. Speaking of space, the bigger venue also offers the chance for the castmembers of several beloved to team up for a number of collaborations. And if there’s anything music theatre fans love unconditionally (besides a good umbrella number,) it’s collaborations.

"You'll see different shows interacting with each other," along with musical numbers from proven hits, among them Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, The Lion King and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, says co-executive producer Ricky Kirshner for USA Today. "In many other worlds, like the music world or TV, everyone is off doing their own thing. But here, they're all friends."

And to add to the hype, audience favorite Neil Patrick Harris returns to host again this year, for what will be his fourth time at the Tonys. Clearly, the producers couldn’t get enough of the witty, multi-talented performer and frankly, who can. Harris, who is a busy father of two, will also be hosting the Emmys later this year. On the occasion, he recently tweeted: Pulling the bi-fecta."But the Tonys have even more to offer this year, especially in the way of nominees. Several Hollywood screen actors have made a more or less successful transition to the stage in recent years and this year’s award show might be honoring some of them, Like Tom Hanks for Nora Ephron's Lucky Guy this Sunday ("Tony loves movie stars when they're game and credible," wrote USA TODAY's Elysa Gardner) and of course, there’s ScarJo. No, sadly the actress got looked over for her part in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, along with the likes of Bette Midler, Alec Baldwin, Jessica Chastain, Katie Holmes and Alan Cumming. However, in the name of sportsmanship, Johansson will take a break from shooting Captain America: Winter Soldier, to stop by and present an award or two. And with such a star-studded cast and producers who have been working for a year to make this happen, it’s almost certain that this year’s Tony Award ceremony will go all out.

This Year's Kids Choice Awards Dished Out More Slime Than Statuettes

Kristen Stewart Johnny Depp Josh Duhamel Christina Aguilera Pitbull Neil Patrick Harris Sandra Bullock

The Kids Choice Awards happened last night and they came with a whole lot of the traditional sliming.

Whether you go home with one of the blimp-shaped trophies or not, everyone’s a winner at the KCA, as long as they manage to avoid the sliming – which most of the A-list attendees didn’t do, as you might imagine. The first person to get a face full of the green goop was none other than rapper Pitbull himself, after he and Christina Aguilera opened the show with their song “Feel This Moment” along with a gang of mini-Me backup dancers. The performance went without a hitch, if you don’t count Aguilera sneakily sliming her co-star at the end of the show.

Johnny Depp and Kristen Stewart were among those honoured with an award – for favorite movie actor and favorite movie actress/female butt-kicker respectively. Remarkably, both of them managed a narrow escape from the sliming (well, almost). When accepting her award, Kristen commented: "Dude, I was too much of a coward to accept this," she exclaimed from the stage at the University of Southern California's Galen Center.

'How I Met Your Mother' Will Finally Reveal Mysterious Titular Parent In Final Season

Neil Patrick Harris Josh Radnor Cobie Smulders Alyson Hannigan Jason Segel

The co-creator of 'How I Met Your Mother' Craig Thomas has confessed that the identity of narrator Ted Mosby's mysterious future spouse will be finally revealed in the ninth and last season of the show.

The CBS comedy show will make its conclusion in the next season but writers insist that all loose ends will be tied. "The plan has always been to meet this girl at some point", he told TVGuide.com. '[CBS] want to make sure, I guess, that the audience knows they're not going to be jerked around or short changed in any way.' He also mentioned that they wanted to go all out with the new series in its 'final lap', claiming that there will be no 'withholding of fun ideas' and describing the conclusion as a 'carpe diem' type affair.

In case one of our main stars; Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel; were to leave the series too early, however, Thomas said that they had 'a Plan A and a Plan B' as to how the series would make its finale. The rest of season 8 is currently being aired on Mondays on CBS in the US as well as E4 in the UK.

CBS Confirms One Final Season For 'How I Met Your Mother'

Neil Patrick Harris Jason Segel Alyson Hannigan

How I Met Your Mother, the enduring CBS sitcom, has been confirmed for renewal for its final series – the ninth since the show began back in 2005.

Making stars of the likes of Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segel, as well as furthering the careers of the likes of Alyson Hannigan, the show has enjoyed a steady popularity both in the United States and abroad, and there was no surprise that it’s received commission for one final run. "Through eight years, 'How I Met Your Mother' has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch phrases," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said in a statement. "We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television's most mysterious mother to some of TV's most passionate fans."

Another statement, from Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen of 20th Century Fox Television, added "We're thrilled to have the entire and incredibly talented 'How I Met Your Mother' cast back for one final season to bring the series to a proper close. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are masterful and hilarious storytellers, and we have no doubt that they will guide one of the greatest comedies of the last decade to a gratifying conclusion when they finally reveal the identity of the Mother."

How I Met Your Mother Confirmed For 9th And Final Season, May Copy Seinfeld

Neil Patrick Harris Jason Segel Alyson Hannigan Cobie Smulders Josh Radnor

Finally, we might find out how Ted met his kids' mother. The CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother has been confirmed by its makers that it will return for a 9th season, but that its season will be the last.

We'll have to say goodbye to Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Ted (Josh Radnor), Marshall (Jason Segal), Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Robin (Cobie Smulders), but its legacy will live on in Suit Up Day, at the very least. From the writers of Friends, it has managed to retain a good audience and does particularly well with the sought after demographic of 18-49, according to the Los Angeles Times. Having premièred in 2005 it is now in its 9th season, and has followed Ted and his friends while he narrates the story of how he met his children's mother. Every relationship that he has seems to continually imply that that is their mother, but always fizzles out.

"Through eight years, 'How I Met Your Mother' has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch phrases," CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in a statement. "We are excited for Carter [Bays], Craig [Thomas] and [executive producer] Pam Fryman and this amazing cast and to tell the final chapter and reveal television's most mysterious mother to some of TV's most passionate fans."

Stevie Wonder To Perform Over Super Bowl Weekend

Stevie Wonder Justin Timberlake Alicia Keys Beyonce Knowles Neil Patrick Harris

Musical genius, icon and all-round nice guy Stevie Wonder is going to make the Super Bowl weekend a whole lot more magical, as he will be performing in New Orleans next week for the much-anticipated Super Bowl extravaganza.

A spokesperson for the once a year event said today (Jan 25) that Bud Light will be sponsoring the concert, which will also feature performances by Texan blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. and more at an open-air venue near the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in NO. But wait, there's more!

If the prospect of having Alicia Keys perform the national anthem prior to kick off, Beyonce (and maybe even the rest of Destiny's Child) performing at halftime and Stevie all in the same city over the same weekend, the star-studded line-up doesn't end just there. Justin Timberlake is lined up to appear live for the first time in over four years during the 'DIRECTV Super Saturday Night' performance on the 2nd. The performance is an invitation-only concert being held directly after DIRECTV’s 'Celebrity Beach Bowl,' with singer/rapper Pitbull set to perform at that shindig too.

Big Bucks Superbowl Ads Sell For $4m Per 30 Seconds, But Neil Patrick Harris Ad Attacked For 'Gay Agenda'

Neil Patrick Harris

The superbowl is one of the biggest events of the US calender, with millions upon millions of people tuning in around the world to see the final of the season's football. It's no wonder, therefore, that its mid-game advertising costs so much - nor that the enormous spotlight it sheds on anyone involved in the event could end up drawing negative attention towards them, which is precisely what's happened to Neil Patrick Harris.

Neil Patrick Harris, an openly gay man, is part of the advertisement campaign letting everyone know the date of the Superbowl, along with Beyonce Knowles who will be performing at the half time show. In their respective advertisements, they both have football eye black on their cheeks, with writing on their faces with information about the game. However, the Houston Chronicle's The Buzz reports, one Christian group has accused him of using the platform to 'push his gay agenda' and to mock Christianity.

A footballer, Tim Tebow, uses his eyeblack to spread messages too, normally they're bible passage references. While the religious group thinks Harris is mocking Tebow, The Buzz's reporter astutely noted that bible passage references are also definitely, pushing an agenda. Harris's ad says nothing at all about homosexuality, and we're not entirely sure what a 'gay agenda' is, other than, to, y'know, be enjoy life as whomsoever you are? Pretty good agenda right there.

How I Met Your Mother To Be Renewed For Ninth Season

Jason Segel Neil Patrick Harris

How I Met Your Mother, or All The Women I Slept With Before I Met Your Mother, will return for a ninth season, it was announced last night.

There had been some doubts over whether or not the show would return for another season after Jason Segel, who plays Marshall on the show, was reportedly sat on the fence over whether to return or not. However, according to Deadline, Segel decided to stick with the show for at least one more year after a last-minute change of heart during last night's negotiations. Deadline quotes a source as saying that Segel "decided to bail and leave the cast hanging, but he just got turned around today at the last second. The show was literally dead."

Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Barney, was also reportedly undecided whether or not to return to the show, but decided to pledge his time to the HIMYM some weeks earlier, leaving everyone hanging on Segel's word. Now though, it looks as though Christmas may have come early for HIMYM  fans as the show will definitely be returning next year. In fact, executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have even hinted that this season may very well be the last when speaking to E! last month. Bay said: "It's obvious this show is around one central question, so that meeting [of the mother] will be part of the endgame of the show. How much the show will go beyond that, we can't really say one way or the other."

Katy Perry Fails To Come Up With Original Fancy Dress Outfit

Katy Perry John Mayer Skrillex Ellie Goulding Neil Patrick Harris Kristen Stewart

Katy Perry kicked off her birthday festivities this weekend by throwing a predictably lavish costume-party at Los Angeles' Magic Castle nightspot. The singer turns 28 on Thursday (Oct 25, 2012), though hardly made an effort to upstage her famous guests by dressing as a fairly standard vampire.

It was beau John Mayer who put a little more thought into his outfit, opting to arrive as a vampire hunter complete with prosthetic nose and chin, reports US Weekly. Elsewhere, Kristen Stewart snuck into the event fairly unnoticed, while house music DJ Skrillex and girlfriend Ellie Goulding were snapped in some pretty poor looking skeleton outfits. Diane Warren, Johnny Wujek, David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris were also in attendance. The 'How I Met Your Mother' star tweeted a photograph from the event, adding, "Thank you @KatyPerry for having @DavidBurtka and me at your frightfully fun B'day Bash at the @MagicCastle last night."

Earlier in the weekend, Katy had joined Mayer's family and friends to celebrate his 35th birthday at Freemans restaurant on Manhattan's Lower East Side.

The Oscars 2013: Is Seth MacFarlane The Best Man For The Job?

Seth Macfarlane Jason Segel Neil Patrick Harris Mila Kunis

The Oscars is the biggest annual event in western film culture, perhaps matched only by the Cannes Film Festival. Winning an Oscar is a director's, actor's or writer's proudest moment and one that will ensure career longevity and continued success. So, to host the Oscars is a pretty big deal- is Seth Macfarlane, a squat comedy writer whose shows have been censored and even banned in the past the right man for the role? And, if he's not, who may have been a better choice?

Seth MacFarlane is the creative mind behind the animated comedy tour-de-force Family Guy, as well as American Dad and The Cleveland show. He branched his career out further this year writing, directing and starring in the movie “Ted”.

However, MacFarlane had a slight mishap when hosting the Emmys this year, in which he couldn't find the mic. If he has a similar slip-up this year, the award directors may be lamenting not opting for someone else. But who else could step up to the mark? Judging on entertainment value and quality The Muppets would have been an excellent choice, or even the man responsible for bringing them vehemently back to life earlier this year, Jason Segel. Neil Patrick Harris is another all-rounder who would be great for the job, or even Mila Kunis.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3d Christmas Review

Very Good
A warm, squishy centre makes this smutty comedy surprisingly endearing as it bounces from one random set piece to another, by way of a series of outrageous cameos. The sex, drugs and violence get a bit tiring, but the amusing writing and acting keep us laughing.

While stoner Kumar (Penn) is failing to cope with the chaos of his life, now-respectable banker Harold (Cho) is dreading Christmas with his wife's (Garces) extended family, including his terrifying father-in-law Perez (Trejo).

When Kumar drops off a mis-delivered package at Harold's house, their first meeting in six years causes instant chaos. Now they have to team up to replace Perez's prized Christmas tree. This involves scary encounters with a Scarface-style mobster (Koteas), mean-acting tree sellers (RZA and Da'Vone McDonald) and the real Santa (Richard Riehle).

The Smurfs Review

OK
A simplistic approach means that this charming adventure-comedy will only appeal to very young children. While it's lively and enjoyably silly, there's just not enough wit in the story or characters, nor enough skill in the animation.

Life is idyllic for the tiny blue Smurfs, whose village is hidden from view in a European valley. But the evil-but-hapless wizard Gargamel (Azaria) wants to capture their magical essence and, when he finds their village, he chases six of them through a vortex that dumps them into Manhattan. Lost in the city, the Smurfs befriend Patrick (Harris) and his pregnant wife Grace (Mays), whose help they need to both escape Gargamel and regenerate the vortex to get home.

Meanwhile, Patrick's under pressure from his boss (Vergara) to come up with an ad campaign.

Undercover Brother Review

OK

An "Austin Powers"-style blaxploitation spoof, "Undercover Brother" doesn't miss a single joke. Its title sequence alone -- a montage depicting the rise and fall of African-American culture (from Jesse Jackson and James Brown highs to Urkel and Dennis Rodman lows) -- is a laugh riot, in a sad-but-true kind of way.

So is the plot, about The Man, a megalomaniacal Caucasian corporate billionaire, trying to stop a Colin Powell-like black politician (Billy Dee Williams) from running for president ("He's so well-spoken," says a patronizing white news anchor). The Man has him kidnapped and brainwashed into opening a chain of fried chicken joints that will serve "nappy meals" instead. (Politically correct? What's that?)

There's only one man who can stop this evil plan: Undercover Brother, baby!

The Next Best Thing Review

Weak

Homogenized, sterilized and clearly revised by test-audience scoring, "The Next Best Thing" is a disingenuous, emotionally deficient comedy-drama about an earthy yoga teacher who has a baby with a gay friend after a night of booze-fueled accidental amour.

Starring mismatched Madonna and Rupert Everett as the atypical parents who decide to live as a family and raise their son together, there is a core of sincerity in the script that is lead to slaughter by the studio's desire to pat itself on the back for being edgy without losing ticket sales to the lowest common denominator crowd.

The story starts well enough, with our unusual couple commiserating over failed relationships by getting hammered on margaritas one evening, then waking up the next day in a compromising position. Next thing they know, Abbie (Madonna) is knocked up, Robert (Everett) embraces the responsible daddy role, and they move in together -- much to the amazement of friends and family.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle Review

Good

There is a key to good'n'stupid lowbrow comedy that few lowbrow moviemakers understand, and it is this: If you have a thin but serviceable premise upon which to build cheap, vulgar, tasteless, but side-splitting dumb gags, don't slap together some insipid story clogged with clichés to prop it up -- just run with what you've got.

Don't turn your movie into Adam Sandler or Rob Schneider fodder, full of insulting attempts to make audiences genuinely feel for your imbecile heroes and wishy-washy life lessons for your stock characters to learn in the last act. Don't be an "American Pie" and backpedal on your vulgarity at the last minute with a hypocritical-apology "happy" ending.

Instead, be proudly, shamelessly, flippantly stupid, like "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," in which two recent-grad, odd-couple roommates don't discover anything about themselves, they never see any "bigger picture," and they don't grow up at all. They just get stoned out of their gourds on a Friday night, develop the munchies for those famous square hamburgers from the titular eastern-U.S. fast food joint, and spend the rest of the picture having preposterous misadventures while driving all over New Jersey hunting for the nearest franchise location.
