Departing from the strategy implemented by his predecessor Dick Ebersol, who insisted on airing the most popular Olympics events during primetime, NBC Sports Group President Mark Lazarus said on Tuesday that for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, NBC "will make every event available on one platform or another live." In a conference call with reporters from Lausanne, Switzerland shortly after it was announced that NBC had won the bidding for the summer and winter Olympics through 2020 for $4.38 billion, Lazarus appeared to allow himself some wiggle room. Reuters quoted him as saying "We think that with today's technological advances and the ability for live streaming and broadband, the experience is good for the super sports fan but doesn't necessarily change our strategy for how we'll [approach] primetime and build for that shared audience and shared experience." That seemed to suggest that some events carried live on one platform might be carried by NBC during primetime via tape-delay. (Ebersol had reportedly rejected such a strategy out of concern that the live broadcast would cannibalize the taped one.)
