Apparently concerned that too much online coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics could cannibalize the television audience, NBC is planning to show only curling and hockey live online, Broadcasting &Cable reported today (Monday). "That's a big departure from its much-touted 2,200 hours of live streaming for Beijing in 2008," the trade publication commented. The network does intend to make every other event available online for on-demand viewing, but only after the events have been broadcast live on either the NBC broadcast network or its cable siblings. Nevertheless, Perkins Miller, senior VP of digital media for NBC Sports & Olympics, told B&C that the delayed webcasts should be welcomed by viewers. "People want to watch the Olympics while sitting in front of their 50-inch television when it is most convenient for them," he said.
