Berkus and and his husband Jeremiah Brent have revealed they are expecting a baby via a surrogate.
The couple made the big announcement on the designer's Facebook page, writing, "We have had the most special year and its (sic) Just become even more beautiful. We are happy to announce that we are expecting our first child! While we can't share much, we can say that thanks to a surrogate and the support of those we love we will officially be a family in the spring of 2015!"

Reality Tv star and design guru Nate Berkus married his boyfriend Jeremiah Brent in a historic ceremony on Saturday (03May14).
Berkus and Brent, who became engaged in April 2013 during a trip to Peru, became the first same-sex couple to hold their wedding at New York's iconic Public Library, representatives for the couple have confirmed to People.
Oprah Winfrey, who first introduced the public to Berkus on her former talk show, Busy Philipps and Rachael Ray were among the 220 guests at the ceremony.

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent married in an exclusive New York ceremony on Saturday (3rd May).
Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are married! Designer Berkus, who is best known as the presenter of American Dream Builders, married his designer and TV personality partner Brent in an incredible ceremony at the New York Public Library on Saturday (3rd May). The couple made history by becoming the first same sex couple to marry at the famous wedding venue.
Berkus even included a few of his own designs in the wedding décor with the ceremony wall including a selection of fabrics from Berkus' own lines for Calico. The farm style wooden tables which the 220 guests dined on were covered with white table clothes also from Berkus' collection. On the subject of fabrics, 42-year-old Berkus wore a J. Crew suit and 29-year-old Brent wore a Saint Laurent.

Their chosen colours were minimalist with black, whites and creams embellished with touches of gold. The latter colour matched the couple's simple gold bands which they exchanged at the Sheri Salata officiated ceremony. Salata is the president of Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Winfrey herself, a long term friend of Berkus, also attended the ceremony. Winfrey was not the only celebrity to have helped the couple celebrate their nuptials as amongst the guests were Rachael Rae, Katie Lee and Elizabeth Hendrickson.
The couple became engaged last April whilst vacationing in Peru. Berkus has been in one major relationship prior to Brent but it ended in tragedy. Berkus was previously in a long term relationship with photographer Fernando Bengoechea who tragically died in the 2004 Sri Lanka tsunami.

Ellen DeGeneres has been nominated for 12 Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards including Outstanding Talk Show for 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show'.
The talk show host's 'The Ellen DeGeneres' show will go up against 'Live With Regis and Kelly', 'The View' and 'The Talk' - which features Sharon Osbourne on its panel - for the Outstanding Talk Show award at the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on June 23.
Ellen's 12 nods gives her the highest number of nods for a chat show this year, with Oprah Winfrey's self-titled series up for four accolades including Outstanding Directing in a Talk Show.

'Glee' - which stars Chris Colfer as gay Kurt Hummel - has been nominated for a Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award
'Glee' has been nominated for a Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award.
The US musical comedy show - which saw cast member Chris Colfer, who plays openly-gay Kurt Hummel, receive a Golden Globe award on Sunday (16.01.11) - will compete against 'Modern Family' 'Greek', 'Nurse Jackie' and 'United States of Tara' in the Outstanding Comedy Series category.
GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said: "This year's nominees represent some of the images and stories at the root of the growing acceptance of our community and support for our equality. They also have created a benchmark for inclusion of our community that other media outlets should look to.

Nate Berkus, the popular American interior designer and television personality, is recovering at home after undergoing surgery for appendicitis, reports the Associated Press. Sony Pictures Television have confirmed that the 39-year-old is 'resting comfortably' after being hospitalised on Tuesday (30th November 2010).
Berkus is expected to be back at work taping his New York based 'Nate Berkus Show' at some point next week. The designer, a protege of Oprah Winfrey, launched his syndicated weekday show back in September 2010. Earlier this week, the designer's rep told People Magazine, "He was on the 'Today' show this morning and he wasn't feeling well. He powered through and then went straight to the hospital after that and they learned he had appendicitis", before adding, "He was in a lot of pain. I don't think people realized how ill he was".
The 39-year-old, who runs interior design firm 'Nate Berkus Associates', began his television career as a regular guest on 'The OPRAH WINFREY show', offering design advice to viewers. His rep added that Berkus' condition is good and that doctors "expect a quick recovery".
