Ghosts Of Mars Review

Terrible
America loves convenience. After all, we're the culture that invented the cell phone, the 24-hour ATM, and my most beloved, the remote control. Yet perhaps this time, with Ghosts of Mars, we have taken our love of convenience to far.

Ghosts of Mars stars Natasha Henstridge as a tough as nails, pill-poppin', Martian cop, sent with her squadron to retrieve "Demolition" Williams (Ice Cube) from a remote mining town for trial back home. When she and her comrades, appropriately dubbed "The Commander," "The Rookies," and the guy with the cool accent discover the town's residents slaughtered, they are forced to team up with Williams to escape from the remaining residents' head-chopping, alien-possessed clutches.

It Had To Be You Review

Good
Sweet and inoffensive, It Had to Be You probably didn't deserve to be unceremoniously dumped on the direct-to-DVD market, but here it is.

The cute tale is reminiscent of Sleepless in Seattle and Serendipity, with a star-crossed couple (Natasha Henstridge and Michael Vartan) meeting unfortuitously on the eve of their respective weddings to other people. Well, the eve before that, anyway -- they happen to be registering for gifts at the same time. While everyone around them tries to convince the two that their respective betrotheds are total idiots, they maintain their faithfulness, despite a near-miss-kiss in Central Park.

Dog Park Review

Bad
It is rare that a great actress (Garofalo) will make two really bad movies, back to back. It is even rarer that those two movies will premiere on the same day. And what are the odds that those two films will star brothers (eg. Luke Wilson in this movie and Owen Wilson in The Minus Man)?

According to my astrologer/numerologist, it's an 18 billion to one shot.

Bounce Review

Weak

In "Bounce," Ben Affleck goes searching for the widow of the dead guy who got his seat on a doomed airliner. He plans to apologize but falls in love with her instead.

He doesn't tell her their meeting was no coincidence, despite several clear opportunities, and he shows no credible guilt over it. One night, the widow (a very moving Gwyneth Paltrow) bears her soul about her grief, and still he holds his tongue. Another night he sleeps with her instead of telling her the truth. He buddies up to her two young sons as a way to avoid telling her on other occasions. And when he finally does fess up, it's too late -- she's already found out from somebody else.

Yet we're supposed to like this selfish jackass because he's a recovering alcoholic and a glib stud learning What's Really Important In Life. We're supposed to feel bad for Ben and his broken heart. We're supposed to root for Ben and Gwynnie to get back together because his eyes get a little moist after she gives him his walking papers.

The Whole Nine Yards Review

Good

Congratulations Matthew Perry, for being the second member of the "Friends" cast (after Lisa Kudrow) to find a big screen starring vehicle that's actually funny.

A screwball comedy of compounding complexity, "The Whole Nine Yards" casts Perry as Nicholas "Oz" Oseransky, a miserably married Montreal suburbanite whose nervous nature kicks into overdrive when a mafia turncoat known as Jimmy The Tulip -- a hitman so cool he's played by Bruce Willis -- moves in next door, looking for a little R and R after ratting out the mob.

When Jimmy wants to be pals, it's an offer Oz thinks he'd better not refuse, but he sweats bullets reading Scorsese-movie innuendo into every innocuous thing his neighbor says, like "Let's go for a drive." Yikes!

Dog Park Review

Weak

Melancholy and spiritless, the dreary romantic comedy "Dog Park" plays like it was written by a depressed guy in the wake being dumped.

That guy would be former "Kids In the Hall" cast member Bruce McCulloch, who also makes his wildly unpolished directorial debut with this borderline depressing yarn about rebound romance.

The picture stars sad-eyed, generic nice guy Luke Wilson ("Home Fries") as Andy, a downtrodden recent dumpee whose ex (Kathleen Robertson) broke his heart and took his dog. Now he goes to the park without a four-legged companion and wallows in self-pity.

The Whole Ten Yards Review

Weak

There was one question that kept surfacing in my mind while watching "The Whole Ten Yards," and it wasn't what motivated this superfluous sequel (studio greed) or how anyone can be expected to keep track of all the frivolous loose ends of its disjointed manifold plot (one can't).

The question was this: Why am I even bothering to try?

In an attempt to recapture the cleverly convoluted screwball spirit of "The Whole Nine Yards" -- a 2000 comedy in which a skittish suburban dentist (Matthew Perry) had his life turned upside down when a retired hit man (Bruce Willis) moved in next door -- this overcooked movie becomes a jumble of incoherent storylines that don't converge so much as collide.

Ghosts Of Mars Review

Weak

There's a definite B-movie appeal to the ham-fisted acting, high body count and heavy metal soundtrack of John Carpenter's sci-fi/action/horror flick "Ghost of Mars."

The man has been making roguishly chintzy movies for a living since 1974's space-faring spoof "Dark Star," and he's good at it. But give Carpenter an A-movie budget and a script devoid of camp value, and you just don't get what you paid for.

Here's a high-concept story about long-dormant ethereal Martians taking over the bodies of human colonists and going on killing sprees en masse, and there's not a tongue-in-cheek laugh to be had in the whole picture. Instead, there's a lot of testosterone posturing, heavy artillery fire and a burdensome flashback-within-flashback narrative that follows a police unit dispatched to a remote "Mad Max"-like mining outpost to bring back a supposedly savage criminal played by the permanently furrow-browed Ice Cube.
