Jackie Review

Essential

Rather than make a standard biopic about the most famous First Lady in American history, this film centres on just a few days in her life to offer some telling insights not only into the woman in question but also the culture of celebrity and the nature of political legacies. Yes, it's a complex, provocative film, artfully directed by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain (Neruda) and anchored by a riveting performance from Natalie Portman.

The story is set in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, as Jackie (Portman) retreats to her seaside home in Massachusetts to make plans for her future. She is visited by a journalist (Billy Crudup), who asks her about her experience in the days after her husband (Caspar Phillipson) was shot while sitting next to her in the back of a car. During these days, she has been faced with some big questions. Who is she arranging the funeral for? Herself? Her children? The American public? The future generations who will remember her husband? The only people she can confide in are her brother-in-law Bobby (Peter Sarsgaard), her assistant Nancy (Greta Gerwig) and a straight-talking priest (John Hurt). Her husband may have been a relentless philanderer, but Jackie is consumed by grief and unsure where her life will go now.

Box Office Preview: Thor Should Smash Box Office With His Hammer [Trailer]

Chris Hemsworth Tom Hiddleston Natalie Portman

It’s not that Thor: The Dark World is a particularly brilliant film – the indifferent reviews put an end to that kind of talk – but probably the lack of meaningful competition that mean this weekend will be Marvel-centric. Chris Hemsworth and his chums should clean up.

Thor

The plot takes place after the events of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s Avenger’s. Thor is trying to restore peace across the cosmos, but an ancient race – lead by Malekith – have other ideas, and intend to restore the universe to its previous state of darkness. Thor: The Dark World is due to be released in the US this weekend. The sequel to the 2011 Marvel film sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) reuniting with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in order to face a new and dangerous enemy.

Tom Hiddleston
Tom Hiddleston's performance as Loki has been highly praised.

Critics have been largely underwhelmed by the film and have described it as lacking in the vigour and excitement of its predecessor. Critics have commented on two particular, and crucial, aspects of the film: namely the "overcomplicated" plot and the "tacky 3D effects."

Lynne Ramsay Sued By Movie Bosses After Ditching Natalie Portman Western

Lynne Ramsay Natalie Portman Ewan McGregor Michael Fassbender Jude Law Bradley Cooper

Lynne Ramsay is being taken to court by the producers of the oft-troubled Western Jane Got Her Gun, starring (supposedly at least) Natalie Portman. Ramsay walked out on the project a day before shooting was scheduled to begin, placing the picture in limbo until a replacement was eventually found. The lawsuit goes on to claim that Lynne was drunk and abusive on the set.

Lynne Ramsay
Ramsay reportedly left the project the day before shooting was due to begin

The court papers, acquired by The Hollywood Reporter, were filed in a New Mexico court this week and state that Ramsay was paid $750,000 to work on the screenplay for the film and direct, but she dropped out of the project at the last minute without warning. The producers are now claiming that her sudden abandoning of the project was not off character either, as the Scottish director was supposedly highly unprofessional on set, drinking and abusing staff before filming had even begun.

A Confident Overseas Performance Indicates Domestic Bliss For 'Thor 2: The Dark World'

Chris Hemsworth Natalie Portman Tom Hiddleston Anthony Hopkins

Disney have had some troubling releases in the past few years, with potential blockbusters (we won't name names) bombing tremendously when they came to the big screen. Its a good thing that the Marvel branch of their movie operations is performing so well then, as the latest Disney/Marvel release, Thor 2: The Dark World, has already made a sizeable impression on the overseas market since it was released last week.

Opening in the UK and France on Wednesday, 30 October, and other major markets Australia and Germany a day later, the film was the runaway winner at the weekend box office in each of these foreign markets and early predictions have estimated that the film could have made up to $100 million already. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has made an estimated $109,400,000 from foreign markets since it was released last week. When the film opens in the US on 8 November, there is a good chance that it could match this kind of popular reception and go on to make a hefty amount in the box office by the end of its run.

Tom Hiddleston Continues In His Quest To Be Hollywood's Nicest Man With Surprise Charity Visit At NYC Cinema

Tom Hiddleston Chris Hemsworth Natalie Portman

Tom Hiddleston has garnered a reputation as being one of the kindest gentlemen you would be lucky enough to run in to. Whether he's tackling poverty, giving kids a lift on his shoulders for the sake of it, bringing people soup or just generally being a good guy, the man sets an example across celeb-dom of how you should behave. So when it came time for him to choose between staying in London and partying with his Thor co-stars following the premiere of Thor: The Dark World, or flying across to New York City to surprise kids at an advanced charity screening of the film, you can bet he chose the latter.

Loki

Tom flew across the Atlantic just hours after attending the premiere of the Thor sequel to make a surprise, unannounced visit to an advanced screening of the film and to pay tribute to organisers at the Variety: the Children's Charity of New York and The Children's Aid Society. On Thursday, 31 October, the AMC Empire 25 cinema in Times Square held the one off Variety screening of the new Marvel adventure for the benefit of some of the city's underprivileged children - the perfect arena for Hiddleston to flex his gentlemanly muscles yet again.

Thor: The Dark World Review

Excellent

Marvel can't help itself: these movies have to get bigger and crazier. And this one leaves us wondering where they can possibly go next, as it spirals into a madly funny-scary thriller that threatens the existence of the whole universe. But it also feels like a story children would make up as they go along. Still, the sparky characters and wildly cataclysmic approach are hugely entertaining.

The action picks up right after the Battle of New York (see 2012's The Avengers), and scientist Jane (Portman) is miffed that Thor (Hemsworth) didn't call when he was back on Earth. She has just started dating a nebbish Londoner (O'Dowd) when her assistant Darcy (Dennings) stumbles into a spatial anomaly that draws Jane right into the middle of a 5,000-year-old struggle between Thor's home-realm Asgard and the dark elf Malekith (Eccleston), who wants to use a swirling goo called the Aether to plunge all of existence into blackness just as the universe aligns itself. As this convergence approaches, Thor defies his father Odin (Hopkins) and turns to his disgraced, malicious brother Loki (Hiddleston) for help.

The film is overcrowded with small but pivotal characters, including stern but helpful gatekeeper Heimdall (Elba), mad-doctor Erik (Skarsgard) and Odin's wise wife Frigga (Russo). All of them help distract us from the movie's wildly shifting tone as it darts from sardonic comedy to Lord of the Rings-style battles to silly romance to dark emotion. But the best thing is the tense, unpredictable relationship between Thor and Loki, an enjoyable mixture of sibling rivalry and brotherly love that's well-played by Hemsworth and especially Hiddleston. None of the other characters really has a chance to develop around them. But at least the actors have fun with their roles, including a number of hilarious cameos along the way (there are also two post-credit stings).

Marvel fans in Britain have a chance to see Thor 2: The Dark World next weekend, a whole week before their American friends across the Atlantic. George Clooney's 'Odd Film' 'Gravity' To Open Venice Film Festival

George Clooney Sandra Bullock Robert Downey Jr Blake Lively Scarlett Johansson Natalie Portman

George Clooney's new movie Gravity, about two astronauts stranded in space, will open the 70th edition of the Venice Film Festival on August 28, 2013. The 3D movie by acclaimed director Alfonso Cuaron, will hit theaters in the U.S. on October 4, 2013 and is already drumming up anticipation thanks largely to an intriguing teaser trailer.

"It is a very odd film, really," Clooney told USA Today in 2011, the year before Gravity was originally set to be released. "Two people in space. No monsters. It's more like 2001 (A Space Odyssey) than an action film." It's been a long road to get the movie to screen, with Robert Downey Jr originally pencilled in for the male lead before dropping out of the project and opening the door for Clooney.

Producers originally settled on Sandra Bullock for the female lead after reportedly testing French actress Marion Cotillard and mulling over the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively. Natalie Portman was apparently offered the role without a screen test following her Oscar winning performance in Black Swan, though passed on the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Ewan McGregor Almost Fools Us All With Drastic New Make-Over

Ewan McGregor Natalie Portman Bradley Cooper Jude Law Michael Fassbender

Ewan McGregor is a well-known motorcycle enthusiast, so maybe thats what gave him away when he stepped out of a Beverley Hills salon this week looking almost unrecognisable. The actor, known for his ginger-blonde hair, looked completely different as he was spotted with jet black hair and a same-colour moustache, but still failed to evade the watchful stare of a paparazzi camera lens.

The look is quite the drastic make-over for the Scottish star, but rather than abandoning his ginger/Scottish heritage, the actor does have a reason behind this look; at last we think he does. McGregor is taking on the role of John Bishop, the main antagonist in the upcoming Western Jane Got A Gun, and it is believed his new look is in aid of the performance. Either that or Ewan just fancied a major change to his looks and decided that growing a beard again wouldn't cut it.

Lily Collins To Star As Zombie Slayer In 'Pride & Prejudice & Zombies'

Lily Collins Natalie Portman David O Russell

Lily Collins will be able to add butt-kicking action star/period actress to her resumé soon, as she has been cast as the lead actress in the on-again-off-again movie adaptation of the mash-up novel Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, Variety have reported. The actress has previously held similar roles in Mirror Mirror and the upcoming adaptation of the teen-fantasy novel The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

The movie reworking of author Seth Grahame-Smith's retelling of Pride & Prejudice, with added zombies, has been floating around Hollywood for some time now, with the first few attempts to make the film being dropped after too many would-be directors abandoned the project. The film has gained new financing though, from would-be Miss Bennet Natalie Portman as well as Annette Savitch of Handsomecharlie films, Sean McKittrick of Darko Entertainment and Allison Shearmur of Allison Shearmur Productions.

How Lily Collins Saved Natalie Portman's 'Pride And Prejudice AND ZOMBIES'

Lily Collins Natalie Portman

Lily Collins, the young British star who rose to fame in Mirror Mirror, will play the lead in the big-screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's been a long road for the project, which began with producer Natalie Portman deciding she would play the list. Things soon changed when scheduling conflicts got in the way, while the intended director David O'Russell always left the project. A revolving door of lead actresses, reportedly including Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson, sniffed around the movie, though Collins was able to commit. Charlie St. Cloud director Burr Steers is reportedly in line to direct, according to Empire magazine.

The script - still credited to O'Russell - closely follows Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, though sees a dangerous conflict against a zombie apocalypse in late 18th century England. Lizzie Bennett (played by Collins) will be tasked with fighting the undead.

Hollywood is hot for zombies at the moment, with recent flick 'Warm Bodies' seemingly coming from nowhere to make over $110 million worldwide. If World War Z proves to be as big a success as expected this summer, the team behind Pride and Prejudice and Zombies may well be rubbing their hands together. Collins has plenty of time to boost of profile and she next stars in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which hits theaters on August 23, 2013.

Natalie Portman Dior Ad Pulled For False Advertising

Natalie Portman

A Natalie Portman Christian Dior advert has come under fire from the Advertising Standards Authority, causing the promotional clip to be pulled. The advert featured the actress with heavily made-up eyes staring into a camera, with the advert claiming "Lash-multiplying effect volume and care mascara”, adding  "The miracle of a nano brush for an unrivalled lash creator effect. It delivers spectacular volume-multiplying effect, lash by lash."

However, rival cosmetics company L’Oreal has pointed out that Dior have exaggerated the effect of the mascara, a complaint that’s now been upheld by the ASA after the makers of the mascara admitted that they’d digitally retouched parts of the advert to enhance the effect on Portman.

“Because we considered that we had not seen sufficient evidence to show that the post-production retouching on Natalie Portman's lashes in the ad did not exaggerate the likely effects of the product, we concluded the ad was likely to mislead,” the ASA said. According to The Metro, Dior attempted to defend their actions, stating that the changes had been made in order to “increase the length and curve of a number of lashes' as some had been 'missing or damaged.” They also claimed that they hadn’t received any complaints from customers disappointed at the actual effect of the make-up.

Beautiful Girls Review

Excellent
With a cryptic title like Beautiful Girls, one starts to wonder to whom this film is being marketed. Is it the frat boy model-ogling crowd? Is it a self-help flick for teenage girls? Is it soft porn? The answer, of course, is none of these: Beautiful Girls is a date movie, and quite a good one at that.

Something like The Big Chill meets Generation X, Beautiful Girls is one of those ensemble character movies that really defies description in terms of plot points. The ostensible main character is Willie (Timothy Hutton), who is ambivalent about girlfriend Tracy (Annabeth Gish) so heads back home to Knight's Ridge, Massachusetts to sort things out during his 10-year high school reunion. Here, he hooks up with old pals Tommy (Matt Dillon) and Paul (Michael Rapaport), each of whom is also flailing helplessly in his own romantic mess.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones Review

Good

The climactic lightsaber duel in "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" has to be seen to be believed. It puts the awesome Darth Maul/Obi-Wan fight in "The Phantom Menace" to shame, and it's one of the big pluses in a mixed blessing of a movie that is a vast improvement over its immediate predecessor, but sometimes in fits and starts.

Any fan will have the same reaction to this showdown: As it's about to begin, you'll laugh, because with the characters involved the idea seems almost absurd. Then you'll cheer, because George Lucas knows you're laughing, and plays into it beautifully. Then your mouth will drop open in amazement. How did he pull this off? This is so cool!

Suffice it to say, this scene -- and the huge battle that surrounds it as the fabled Clone War begins -- is worth the price of admission all by itself.
