Naomi Watts is in talks to star in 'Sea of Trees'.

The 45-year-old star is in negotiations with the film's director Gus Van Sant to star alongside 'Dallas Buyers Club' actor Matthew Mcconaughey in the drama set in Japan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

McConaughey has confirmed he will take on the role of an American man who meets a Japanese man in the country's infamous ''Suicide Forest'', also known as the ''sea of trees'', where people go to commit suicide.

However, instead of taking their own lives, the pair then embark on a reflective journey together.

It is unclear so far what role Watts - who most recently starred in 'Diana' - will take on in the movie.

Chris Sparling, who is set to adapt Jo Nesbo crime novel 'Blood on the Slow' for a film starring Leonardo Dicaprio, wrote the script for 'Sea of Trees' while Gil Netter is set to produce.

Watts - who received an Oscar nomination for her performance in 2012's 'The Impossible' currently has three films in post-production, 'While We're Young', 'St. Vincent De Van Nuys' and 'Birdman'.
