Naomi Watts will be playing the role of Diana, Princess of Wales, in the forthcoming movie 'Diana.' The Telegraph today (July 3, 2012) posted a video of Watts in full costume, filming scenes for the movie in the Croatian town of Opatija. The Australian actress cuts a convincing figure, with Diana's trademark hair style and a costume of black dress and bold necklace that recalls some of Diana's most iconic photographs.
The movie is being produced by the British film company Ecosse Films. It will be directed by the Oscar-winning German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (the director of 'Downfall') and will focus specifically on the two years prior to the princess' death. Diana died in 1997, in a car accident in Paris. The filming in Croatia is thought to be taking place over the next two weeks, in the luxury tourist resort. In the 19th century was a favourite summer destination for the Austrian imperial family and is still an area of wealth. The filming of 'Diana' is then said to be moving to Rovinj, described as a "picturesque town on the western coast of the Istria peninsula."
The plot of the movie will cover the events surrounding Diana's affair with a heart surgeon, whilst she was married to Prince Charles. Jessica Chastain was originally attached to the lead role but pulled out. Earlier this year, Watts told the Telegraph "It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."
